Reloading 458 SOCOM

Lots of older web-data is out there, much of it inconsistent. Is anybody here loading this cartridge?

Iíve been running a KAK 16Ē barrel and PrimaryArms bcg with sbr ammo and having fun. Now this small pile of brass is needing to be ammo. I have Hornady 350gr fn 4503 and some powders... ?

Just checked my 10th edition Hornady manual and it doesn't have it. But it does have 458 Lott, so go figure.

I use the Remington 405 JSP a lot. With supers around 1600 FPS and subs. The subs will spin hogs around.

H110/W296 is my ďgotoĒ for supers and I use HS-7 & HS-6 for subs, most often.

You and gozuki convinced me to do this with a kak barrel instead of tromix. Thanks for that. So far, so good. You may be interested in some of this info, I Hope eventually there is helpful data in this thread.
The 405 Remington appears to be discontinued, which is part of the problem Iím finding as itís probably 1/3 of the load ďdataĒ available. Barnes 300gr and 500gr Lehigh seem to be much of the rest. I have plenty of w296, some lilgun and imr4198, so thought Iíd get some stuff put together and see what happens. Casting is a last resort for me.

I finally got a day without rain to set up the chrony at the range
The 350gr loads I worked up with IMR 4198 turned out okay. Max load averaged 1625 fps and was more accurate than I expected. I used a vortex red dot (3 moa dot) @ 100 yds, and had acceptable groups for my casual effort. The second target looks like I tried to shoot a smiley face, but I was just shooting for center.

I loaded up some of the Remington 405's over 30-35 grains of IMR 4198 (in 0.5 gr increments) and took them for a spin yesterday. The interesting part is that the velocities seemed to stall at the low 1500's with charges over 33.5gr. I'll work my way down from 35.0 and find the most accurate load, then move on to another powder.

Today it was Remington 405's over 29.0-31.5 grains of W296. This powder had no problem with velocity, but the 31.5 charges were a little toasty according to the velocities that were predicted with quickload.

I decided to set up a scope to work with on this gun, so I put a Nikon P300 on it and used the lower charges of ammo I was testing to zero the scope at 30yds. The only rounds I had loaded extras for a 100yd target check were the 31.5 and they weren't awesome but grouped within 2". 30.0 and 30.5 were the most consistent, I'll load up some more of those and see how they group.

Saturday I ran several calibers of ammo over the Chrony. The only 458S I shot was this load that looked promising a couple weeks ago. It wasn't as consistent with velocities this time, and the targets were interesting. Using a ten round Pmag (3 rounds of 458S), I'd get 2 holes within an inch then a third hole a couple inches out. It or I did this several times. dunno.

131 fps is aot of velocity varation - or at least it is for pistol. I donít load rifle, so that might be acceptable.

However I do know that your earlier chrono data with only 3 shots fired? The SD and ES figures are largely irrelevant. You canít get an accurate picture of any kind of average until you have 10-20 rounds downrange. I get why you were doing it, I do the same when working up a ladder. But I usually discard the SD/ES figures right then and there.

This is basically a magnum pistol load, and 131 ES is ridiculous. Iím suspicious of the bullet being forced in/out of coal length by recoil causing the third round thing and some of the ES variation. There are 14 more of this load left and I think Iíll check the BTO, COAL, give 10 of them a light crimp, then go to the range and try it again. After the first two Iíll pull the third uncrimped cartridge and check the COAL before firing it. Iíll make a couple other loads to try also and focus on this gun a little more than the others.

The SD/ES from the 3 shot groups have usually been good indicators of loads to go further with, but not in this case.
