Hoo boy! That looks miserable, course it's fun to say you did it, but I'd hate to have to participate.

Wurd.

I think Jeep could take notes on the ATV ramp usage.

They should've put grab handles on it, like an old flat fender. That way they could just pick it up and carry it over the big rocks.

I saw 3 sand rails a few years ago (short guys, kinda more like Minx with cages/bumpers).

They had winches & took turns taking runs at obstacles at high revs & then had another guy nerf them.
Once over an obstacle, the last guy would winch over.

Ran into the same group a year later at the Tahoe trailhead.
However, they were running Barker Pass fireroads (still needed the winches & nerfing).

The first time I did the Rubicon was in 1983. I recall a typical Dune Buggy, fiberglass tube VW, was in there. The would rev it up and bounce over stuff. They were going all the way through, and made it.

Trail is different now. Easier in many locations, tougher in others. I was in a long bed Toyota pick up. First time on the Con. 3" lift, no gears (3.90), no lockers, no Marlin Crawler TC gears, no PS, 33 TruTracks. Made it through without a scratch. That would be tough to do today.

Since there was never an update on how it went, I looked through their fb and it sounds like they suffered the same fate as the one I saw years ago. Smoked clutch

Does anyone know how far they made it or what actually happened?

OK....so we only made it to the top of the bowl. There was only 6 guys with the rig (not 97 hippies). YES we got our ass tugged. we just wanted to try and see how far we could go and fell very short of our goal. As many of you went out that day saw that as soon as we saw traffic, we pulled over and let all go and enjoy the day. Well we where there we did end up helping with a search & resuce that turned out for the best. All found. We where out there also trying out some offroad product MAXTRAX: Vehicle Extraction & Recovery. We beat the hell out of them MAXTRAX and they never gave up. THEY DID WHAT THEY ARE BUILT FOR. We also made a magazine. Let me tell ya WE HAD A BLAST

Thank you to all that helped and being good sports

Almost identical to my first time through there. Bald 33 inch yokohama super diggers and 4.10 gears though.

I remember thinking I had one awesome built rig. I think the only body damage I got was to the airfoil thing under the front bumper.

Many areas on the trail are harder, as the dirt is removed from between the rocks. Others are much easier, unfortunately.

I personally think this is awesome. Some of us started using the trail because it was a challenge. Then we built vehicles that lessened the challenge. Then the obstacles were taken away further lessening the challenge. I like the idea of someone putting the challenge back into it. They knew what they were getting into.
