American Top Gear

Supposedly the American Top Gear is going to the Rubicon today. I just saw film trucks being escorted by CHP and three modified independent front suspension trucks heading up Wentworth leaving Georgetown towards the Rubicon. Hope they don't do the dumb things I've seen them do offroad on other episodes.

This will draw more to the trail. It's not a good thing.

45 degree = 100% = possible, but very hard to do
90 degree is vertical
so 100 degree is the new 80 degree (winch territory)

We ran into them on the trail. About 40 crew members. They were all pretty cool. But the group in front of them that they hired to cook and setup camp were a bunch of dicks. We ran into them at buck island. There were about 5 jeeps with trailers. Moving about as slow as possible. Winching every rock off the trail that was any bigger than a watermelon and refused to let us pass them. I was able pass as they were on the bypasses at Buck. The rest of our group wasn't able to pass till they got down into the springs.

I'm a dick then.

We moved as quickly as possible given the weight we were carrying.

We pulled off to let people by whenever we could.

We winched one rock on the entire trail...a rock that would clearly have slowed us down so much that it would have taken even longer and caused rig damage that may have taken even longer to get us moved.

We were polite but firm and got into confrontations or conflict with no one.

This is a crew with probably 150 years of Rubicon experience combined. Obviously we weren't trying to create a problem...we did the best we could.

Sorry about your impatience.

edit: When you pulled up behind me I was out of my rig and a couple hundred feet down the trail helping my folks. I stopped what I was doing, put my guys on hold, and trotted back up to my rig and moved it forward another hundred feet to a turnout to let you by. I'm a dick.

Yes, American Top Gear was on the Trail. We saw them a few times and they filmed a creek crossing scene in our camp. They were really nice. They stopped and took some selfies with us.

And you winched the rock back where it was after you passed ? I fully understand you moved it to speed up the travel but modifying the trail is not really a good example IMO.

I was in the group with Hurley (hey Mike, this is Robby, Jay's son). We (3 rigs) got stuck behind the trailers going down Big Sluice. One of their trailers flipped over and we helped push it back over. I think it was you ResqueMe and you were friendly.

I'd say 90% of the crew/guides were super nice. However a few of them definitely had sand in their pants and were not interested in letting us pass. Their tail gunner would stop right in front of the bypass to keep us from getting by. It is worth mentioning, our 3 rigs were stretched on 40's we could have passed effortlessly.

At the end of the day we made it, they made it. It was obvious they were tired and exhausted. However, a little trail courteously would have gone a long way.

Wes is super cool, don't think he would have done that on purpose. I'll say something to him. We waited at the tree at the top of sluice for five minutes and no one showed so we moved on. You caught us later in Sluice.

Yah, that was me with the flipped trailer...felt dumb but one of those things. Thanks for the help.

Nope, did not. It was a loose (not imbedded in dirt) rock in a spot on the trail where rocks move all the time from normal driving. We didn't pull it out of the trail, just moved it in the trail. Do you get out and put the rocks back as you found them after you drive by? We all modify the trail all the time. Taking time to run back and check that you haven't moved a rock or moving one back to where it was makes no sense.

I hear people complaining all the time about "rock stacking" and how that modifies the trail and how terrible it is. People in this hobby have been stacking rocks since vehicles existed...don't worry, the stacks are not still all there. Pretty much none of them are.

I will say everything I heard was second hand. I was able to pass and make it down into the spring. By the time the rest of my group arrived. (About 2.5hrs later) They were not happy about being stuck behind a slow group. So yes I'd say their frustration was exaggerated. I know what you've done to help keep the trail open. I'm sorry for calling you a "dick". If we ever meet on the trail again. I owe you a beer.

I'm sure they were frustrated, it was a shit afternoon. For that I apologize, I wish we could have moved faster.

Fair enough on the beer. Or I'll buy you one.

In front of bronco us a blue chevy tracker iirc. Also a yellow toyota disabled abd parked behind caretakers cabin. It got flopped and busted motor mount. Photo taken sat. Some in our group headed out and the film guys made it clear anyone wanting to pass is welcome and many did.

Off topic but I need to thank you guys from the OC that let me use the welder to fix my frame Thursday on Barrett. Awesome timing for me to have you drive by when you did. Now I need to get one of those.
