The full function radios like in the links below do bring the $$$'s to the equation BUT there is much cheaper ways to get into APRS including messaging if you are willing to do a little tinkering. With that said the all inclusive radios bring the simplicity of use to the table.

I have to give credit where credit is due. The fella in the picture below was the guy that approached me and others with the whole APRS idea originally, over three years ago. He worked behind the scenes and did some initial testing before bringing things to my attention.

To be entirely honest I would have to say that while APRS has been around for a long time the Rubicon was lacking somewhat in coverage, Especially with the HT's, and without him driving our projects I don't know that we would be where we are now.

For us it all started with wanting to track our voltage. This developed into a weather station that had that capability which in turn developed the need for a digipeater in the area. The digipeater then enabled reliable messaging and beaconing. Much like other things of this nature, the usefulness of the system then became apparent and was adopted and implemented by others in the local area.

I will add that we had many failures and cold trips in the snow before we finally got things working satisfactorily. At least three radios later and a couple of computer boards. All the while we stuck with it and saw the project through.

If he wants to I'm sure he can explain the cheaper way to get into the APRS messaging and email. I know it involves cheap handhelds, droid phones and small raspberry pi computers

Either way he is the guy to ask and he was the guy with the original vision for improved APRS on the Rubicon.
