I'm no expert...but my understanding is....you can day hike it, no sweat. If you were packing gear and camping past the sign....you'd need a permit.

I've been there to almost Rockbound....if you haven't hiked it....do it...it's amazing.

Thank you for the feed back. I was planning on just a day hike. Any other places to check out on a hike we are going to base camp from Buck Island.

Ok...my curiosity got the best of me.

Apparently you need one Day or Night use. Use at your own risk....getting one is definitely worth it....after 30+ years on the trail, I felt like a knucklehead for not having seen it earlier.

Fawn Lake is a good hike.

you need a permit to enter desolation wilderness. rockbound is just inside the wilderness, so you technically need a permit.

if you're going to hike up there its worthwhile to continue up to rubicon reservoir. last time we spent a night away from the rigs at rubicon reservoir. very nice.

this was taken about a few miles up from rubicon reservoir just below highland lake.

saw this guy between rockbound and buck. about 15' off the hiking trail

Now..here's the creepy part. My friend and I, have climbed up to it...and got in. Thinking, ok..it's 1 foot or 2 foot. Nope. I climbed in, and dropped in up to my neck (I'm 6' 1") and still didn't touch. I'm not claustrophobic, but it's barely bigger than my shoulders...so it's not like you can swim easily...I held on to the edge...went down...and touched nothing with my toes. Zip. Lord knows how deep it goes. If you're brave one day...give it a go.

Resurrecting a great old thread....I've always wanted to get a picture of someone in the "Bird Bath" to show how deep this odd hole is in the side of a solid granite.

So, 9 years after I posted this....I sent a young buck....who said, "I'll DO IT!". Then got there and said NO WAY!!!

Well...after some mansize peer pressure....he went in up to his neck and got out as fast as he could...haha. It's one of those things....once you realize you can't touch anything, you don't WANT to touch anything!!
