Don't tell anyone I wrote this....it will blow my cover.

Breathe deep, fresh mountain air
Without doubt, Dennis is there
Forever crawling in yellow
His smile, it would mellow

The trail was his muse
His joy would infuse
And bring foes to embrace
For the good of this place

RIP
Dennis Mayer

I truly apologize for bringing this up. I recently lost my father to Leukemia, and wanted to offer any support I could because I understand how difficult it is to lose a loved one.

Again, sorry, and I offer my deepest condolences to the family.

I modified the first post a little to reflect an answer to questions on how someone can go so quickly. Dennis had a plan and time will reveal it to us I am certain. He always expected someone to agree to a task when he asked and that person most always felt obligation immediately.

I miss my friend more than I ever thought I would.

No worries -- Scott added a few more specifics, and I think it is fair for Dennis' friends to know some of the details. If you need more beyond that for some reason, please PM me.

I'm bringing up a bottle or two of Patron this Saturday at Loon Lake. Dennis loved the stuff, and we'll toast those folks not in attendance, raising our glasses to the North, South, East, West, and Heaven Above.

Dennis Mayer - A Friend, Hero, Mentor

Aaron says it perfectly: "Dennis Mayer - A Friend, Hero, Mentor"

And that is how most referred to Dennis before his accident. And you heard, 'How does he do all he does?' and, 'How can he never complain?'.

How many people can you say that about?

We also know Dennis wants us to take action in his absence. Many will have to work hard simply to fill his shoes.

It's really amazing to see how many lives Dennis touched over the years. I did not know him well and I am sure he didn't know me but something tells me that it wouldn't matter to him...he would still lend a helping hand. Thanks for everything you have given...God Bless!!!

I got may HAM license in April, but not through Dennis. Through the grape vine I heard about the cinder block hall to Spider over Father's Daye weekend. My wife and I volunteered to tow a low of blocks into Spider.

While we traded many emails as we planned the trip, the first time I met Dennis was at the Kiosk at Spider while we loaded up the building supplies. What an impression he made. We followed him in much of the way to Spider as he towed a load in himself.

That night at Merlins cabin we shared stories and a few beers. He was the leader of the group, but not ashamed to ask for help if needed loading his jeep. It was a weekend we will never forget for many reasons.

That was the one and only time we had the privelage of meeting him, but I have seen him driving his rig through Placerville a few times since. He stood out in a crowd for good reason.

I work for EID in Placerville and it is amazing (or not if you knew the man) who this has consumed many who work there. He was a giant among us.

I didn't get the oportunity to meet Dennis but I saw him on the Rubicon several times.

This pic is like a MAJOR flashback to me.

The last time I saw him was on the slabs, I was heading in and he was heading out. Even though he didn't know me this is exactally how he drove past.... Arm out the side, waving and smiling!

RIP!

Memorial Fund and Celebration of Life

Memorial Fund
The family could use some monetary assistance — Dennis gave freely of his time and resources, but was retired and living on a fixed income, with a very tight budget. Funeral expenses have been non-trivial.

Donations may be sent be U.S. Postal Service directly to:
. Umpqua Bank
. 3880 El Dorado Hills Blvd
. El Dorado Hills, Ca 95762
Deposits can be made at any Umpqua Bank (see www.umpquabank.com for locations). Make your check out to the Dennis Mayer Memorial Fund.

If you have questions about this Memorial Fund, contact:
* Randy Burleson, Fund Executor at (916) 223-1608
* Cathy Whitten, Account Manager at (866) 486-7782

Celebration of Life
Dennis didn’t want a big funeral or memorial, where people are sad and mourning, but with a heart as big as his, and such a huge number of friends and family, it makes sense to come together, so Dennis’ family has approved a Celebration of Life gathering at the Gold Country Fairgrounds.

This will be a casual Celebration of Life gathering with pictures, slides, and short speeches to remember Dennis with laughs and smiles. He loved his friends and family, and he loved the Rubicon Trail and four-wheeling — and he pursued all these with energy and a smile. You can speak up and share, or just listen, smile, and laugh along.

We’ll add details as they become more clear, but reserve some time Sunday, December 14, starting at 2:00 in the afternoon and running for a good while afterwards. Stop in and spend some time with Dennis’ family and friends. The Auburn Jeep Club (AJC), Friends of the Rubicon (FOTR), Rubicon Rockheads club, and Rubicon Trail Foundation (RTF) will be working together to present an upbeat gathering that would make Dennis proud.

More details at W2DWM.com
