Didn't know the man, but the outpouring of sentiments for him is astounding.
Hope I can contribute a fraction of what he has to keeping our trails open and his passing is going to ramp up my determination to do the leadership class.

God speed Dennis and prayers out to his family and friends!

I am one of Dennis Mayer's son, Randy Mayer and I feel the need to give everyone who knew my Dad a reply. I could type on endlessly, but I will try to keep this short. I want to send a heartfelt "Thank You" to everyone who was a friend to my Dad. I knew my Dad well as the family man, but not so well in the 4x4 part of his life. I have been on the Rubicon Trail with him on several occassions and have met many people who took care of my Dad when he was out on the trail. It always made me feel good knowing he was in good hands whoever he was with.
I can't express to all of those who knew him just how much you all meant to him. I told my Mom after he passed; I would be so lucky if I could have half as many friends as Dad does. To be surrounded by those who cared about the trails as much as he did was most likely what kept him going. As his body and vision diminished over the past few years, most people would have given up; but not my dad. Nobody could keep him from doing anything once he set his mind to it. All of you who knew him well are well aware of that.
Part of my healing process has been because of all of you; some of whom I have met and some who have added to this link or who have helped in many other ways. The 4x4 community is truly a close one and I appreciate all of the good thoughts that have been passed forward to my family. We are all looking forward to seeing anyone who can make it to his "Celebaton of Life" You can find out more at the beautiful sight that was created for my Dad at www.w2dwm.com. I hope to meet more of his friends who I can someday also call my friends. Again, Thank you for all of the support and don't stop working hard to keep everthing going that he has been a part of for so many years. I know he won't be forgotten.

It always felt the other way around at the countless meetings where Dennis looked out for the Rubicon and its users... he took care of us, and in that, we were in good hands. He leaves incredibly big shoes to fill, but his is a great example to remember as we try.

He was graciously insistent, and insistently gracious. Not only was he unstoppable, but he swept you along in it...
I miss Dennis, but I am looking forward to his Celebration of Life.

I met Dennis during a Rubicon work weekend and he and I got to spend some time together as he gave me a tour of the Rubicon trail area with a lot of history. He reminded me so much of my grandfather who taught me how to fix everything. I cherished every moment of the time that afternoon with him around the trail. He was so generous with sharing the history and siginificance of the trail. It was like having my grandfather back for a few hours. I am very very sad hearing the news of his passing today.

Randy, good to find you here on the board, Welcome! one might say this is our home away from the trail.
Anyway I was reading your post with a somber smile, thank you.
You know Your Dad is the reason many of us did care more for the trail or rather he showed us HOW to express our love for the trails, He kept us going, I never even considered it was the other way around.... that maybe we help keep him involved. HE is a hero to us all and to our land.
Hope you and your family are doing as well as to be expected, I hope you will let us know if there is anything you need no matter what it is, we would love to help. Dennis would do the same for any of us I am sure.
Hope to maybe see you out on the trail next season. And we look forward to visiting with you and yours at The Celebration, much love and respect, Shannon

I am posting this message from my Mom, Cheryl Mayer in response to all of the postings that I have told her about on this site. I showed the site to her and read her many of them, however she was not able to get through all of them because it was too emotional. She will read them all in the future and jotted down a few words for all of you who might still be visiting; "There aren't enough words to express what a great comfort all of you have given to me at this very difficult time of my life. Dennis is a special person and touched a lot of lives in so many ways. He will be in our hearts forever. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you are all doing. I hope to meet and see all of you at his Celebration of Life." - Cheryl Mayer

I'm very sorry to learn of his passing. I met Dennis on the Rubicon in June of 2003. He was driving his blue CJ. My friend Jim and I found Dennis stopped on the trial due to an electrical problem. We could see that Dennis was going to have a difficult time working on his rig due to the arthritis in his fingers. Jim and I spent about an hour wrestling with the electrical gremlin and eventually got his rig running again. Dennis was a very pleasant guy and had some amazing driving skills. Jim and I were both amazed at how well he could drive with such severe arthritis. It didn't appear that he let the disease stop him from living life to the fullest. It was inspiring.

For me, it is Veteran's Day Weekend... that's when we did most of the RTF classes. Friday an Saturday of that weekend are bittersweet, but Sunday is a long haul, every year.

I'm sad that he's not hear to guide us, but glad that he is so well-remembered. He sure did make a lasting impact in the few years that he was able to engage Rubicon issues.
