question; when i bench tested my glow plugs they heated up and smoked lightly from the residual oil. However, I thought they would normally get real hot like even red in color. Are they malfunctioning? By the way I replaced the two behind the injection pump and chose the next best two and installed them into a position that was easy to get two and then had these results when testing. whats up?

Don't worry about me I have 2 more 1.6td's and a a 1.6na waiting for me and also a spare head with a turbo ready to go.As for the glow plugs the one's I've seen do glow RED when power is applied. I bought new ones for mine $6.00 CDN each, that's like free in the US.

Branden,

It is my experience that if you in fact have the fast glow, glow plugs that after 10 seconds or so of battery power uninstalled they will glow red hot. If not maybe you have the slow glow, if so they too should glow red hot but only after 20 or more seconds.

Hey B
I was looking back thru this thread and it looks like you bought your motor in like late Sept/early Oct.

It is now March.

Someone needs to say this:

HURRY UP

Enough talk here on this thread. Getyour ass a-motor stabbin! The time is near! The snow will soon melt!

This project came out bad ass I must say. Am still working some bugs out and hope to be wheeling it on the Con in the next couple of weeks. I will post up some pics soon.

Right on! glad it has worked out well for you and that your close to gettin on the Con. Make sure you have no heating issues because when your running slow with no wind through the rad, you want good cooling by those electric fans. Jeff and I use duel electric fans with High CFM's. Stay away from the low CFM cheap fans. Put a cowling on it if you can make one up or alter one to fit. Use nothing but the 26 inch VW rad.

Looking forward to seeing you up on the picture trail!!! Way to go. I bet you love that nice low end torque, eh!!!

Front bottom view. Notice the cowl I incorporated to help shove air into the intercooler at road speeds. The intercooler was definately worth the heartache of installation. This install was a tight fit all the way around and with all the other mods I have was a little difficult to engineer it all into place to function correctly as well as being pleasing to the eyes. I think I won the battle because this install is the shit!

One of the tricks to keeping this engine cool besides the 2 12" fans was to shroud it well. This pic shows some shrouding on the top that I made out of polypropolene that I welded together to the right dimensions.

driver side. Adding the toy ifs box with hydro assist and the intercooler changed the difficulty of this install greatly. Without adding these two factors would have been a cakewalk for the average joemechanic.

My testimony is that it was a ton of work to pull this off clean but it drives great on the street and pulls hills nice and steady in 4th and 5th gear. The turbo in my Zuk sound bitchinly out of place but I cant live without that whistle now. I did get to test it out in my friends drainage area(The Pit), and all witnesses and myself were floored with how this engine performed. Obstacles before the engine that I would have to lurch up onto or maybe stall it now are a breeze and I can now idle up them without touching the skinny pedal any. This motor just hunkers down and keeps on chugging even if I am sitting on my tailgate which I did in the pit. I am amazed at this engines performance and would recommend this swap to everyone. Although I hope not to many do it because I like the fact that this is somewhat one of a kind. Going to the Con next weekend for memorial and I will let you all know how it performs on the rocks. Did I mention I cant wait to wheel my junk!!!!! By the way thanks to Sickfab and [email protected] for all of your support throughout this conversion.
