Thoughts on the smoking?

Seems it's over fueling. I can make smoke by rolling on the throttle at any speed....

Stuck injector maybe? No CEL

Pedal is pretty dead until it drops a gear and gets over 2k.

No obvious boost leaks, torn couplers etc

Stuck injector would be white smoke. My bet is exhaust or intake leak. You can build a intake leak checker pretty easily. Exhaust is a little tougher, usually soot tells the tale.

Also could be vgt is stuck? Maybe

Ok good to know. All the up pipes are new. So hopefully it's not that. I'll try to take a peek.

No obvious boost leaks, but hard to tell just at idle.

Servo and vanes seem to move fine, just with my hand anyway.

Sounds exactly like my old 6.0 when fuel pressure dropped.

Are 6.4s as sensitive to fuel pressure?

Yes, nearly the same engine.

Black means too much fuel tho isn't it? Frame rail filter was just changed, engine filter within 5k or so. I'd have to check

I don't know about 6.4 because of common rail vs heui on the 6.0.

And I don't know why, but every time my filters got clogged up, and when the HFCM started to die, It would smoke real bad, have shit for power, and have trouble shifting.

Googling..... Similar symptoms show a few common items:

EBP Sensor
MAP Sensor

Or the EGR valve being blown open a little due to high boost. (its turned off/closed via the tuner, but I also did blow one of the charge air boots off, maybe it was a high boost?)

Or the VGT Servo, moves freely tho key off.

Or the atmospheric turbo has shit the bed.

Thoughts? And suggestions for a code reader that can see senor values etc?

Yeah I just need to figure out whats going on.

It did this once before and uninstalling and reinstalling the software cured it.

Wondering if it might be the EGR valve blowing open? I have some hunting to do tonight.

EBP is clean, MAP was dirty, but cleaned and no different. Cleaned MAF.

I May have been wrong about the egr valve being commanded closed. I can't find that setting now. Unless it's built into the software.

VGT actuator moves upon startup. Moves freely.

High pressure oil leak? Unplugged injector or damaged injector harness?

Pull the codes, even if the CEL isn't on. If there's a tune on the truck, the CEL might not come on even if there is a code.

No codes are able to be pulled by my scanners..... Only one that came back when going back to stock tune was the KAM error, which generally happens with a tune being installed or uninstalled.

No obvious high pressure oil leak, oil is full ( a little over actually....)

If there was an injector issue wouldn't it throw a code?

Any idea if the variable vanes can stick even if the actuator is moving fine?

I'm not familiar with the 6.4 turbo setup other than via google images. If the actuator rod is moving freely when attached to the turbo, then the vane ring must be turning, which means the vanes can't be stuck per my understanding.

High pressure oil leaks are not visible, and leak internally if they are leaking at all. You must read the HPOP numbers with a bluetooth reader and an app like torque pro.

I'm more well versed with the 6.0, sorry I can't be of more help.

No worries, appreciate any more minds thinking on it!

Agree on the turbo, actuator moves, the vanes must be moving. Unless there is a friction fit or something else inside....

The injectors are piezo on this motor, not oil driven like the 6.0's

Correct, idle is perfect, revs freely (smokes even in neutral tho). But under load does not want to make boost from take off.

What does your scantool say that boost pressures are?

Well if the egr valve wasn't the issue, it certainly is now....

Pressure tested. No leaks (big ones anyway... My compressor is small)

Pulled the plunger all the way out (closed I assume) and truck runs better! Still a little smoke, but power off the line is noticeably better.

Yuck, hope that gets better. Is there a EGR delete or block off plate you can install while you are in there?
I have just cut stainless steel gaskets for Duramax's

Yep, just ordered a delete kit. Removes the coolers and that valve, replaces it with a smooth elbow. (gets rid of the throttle body too?)

Luckily we don't have plans for the truck this weekend.

Now 6.0/6.4 guys, waste gate needed or not?
