01 Dodge 2500 Axle Compadability

Nieghbor has a 01 Dodge 2500 v8 gas 2wd truck with a blown rear end and she's being told that the 2wd is different than 4wd and the only used axle out there is over $1000..... is this true? I can't imagine 2wd would be that different.....

Also, is a D70 a bolt in swap? Quick CL search comes up with a few 2nd gen D70's for a few hundred bucks and I'd expect it to be essentially the same but am not sure.

Thanks.

As far as a I know the difference between the 2wd and 4wd entire rear setup is the springs and no block for 2wd. I would say if they are local to you measure things like the spring pad width and go from there, also swap would be easiest if its a drum rear swapped in place of drum or disk rear swapped in place of disk (I keep thinking I have seen an 01 with drums but my dads 01 was disk). Keep gearing in mind too depending on what hers already had. If all else depending on pricing in your area it might be easier\cheaper to just throw a new R&P in the rear and freshen it up while in there.

Any 94-02 axle will bolt up, but driveshaft youkes might be different. 2500’s came with Dana 60-70-80 depending on setup.

Not true.

2wd & 4wd arenít exactly same. Shock mount brackets arenít same. Shocks likely will be too long if you put a 4wd axle into a 2wd truck. I had to move shock mount brackets on the 2wd D80 to go into my 4wd truck

brake changed sometime in 2001, from drum to disc.

The drums and track width changed a little when the 16x8 alum wheels came about ('00ish). I've heard the perch angle may be different too, 2wd vs 4wd.

94-99 diff is maybe 1" less in width and might have to grind the outside of the drum a little to fit those factory wheels.
