GM 1500HD FF axle swap?

I've decided I'm going to put a bit of love into my 03 GMC 1500 HD, since it's pretty thundered but an actual upgrade/replacement truck will be more than I want to spend.

One aspect I've wondered is just how bolt in the like year range AAM 10.5 or 11.5 (the 11.5 would be totally overkill) axle is? I've seen trucks being parted on the buy and sell, and think I could snag a similarly geared axle for very little money. Currently it has the 9.5 SF axle, and I think it's the weak link in the package since I only use the truck to tow about 5 times a year, but get gravel or heavy shit (I did three 3400lb loads of gravel in it the last time I needed some) far more often than that. Obviously the truck is over gross at that point, but I'm more worried about it holding up well than the legality of it.

Since the 1500HD is basically a 2500 (HD?) frame, I would think the spring perch width and shock mounts, etc, would all be exactly the same. Leaving only the issue of if the driveshaft has the wrong ujoint or the wrong length.

Any ideas?

10.5 will bolt right up. May need to snag the driveline that goes with it as I think they are different lengths

Sweet. Already found an 02 2500 with the right axle being parted out here, but it's a regular cab. We'll see how cheap he wants to go on the axle, if he plays ball (and gears are right) I'll go for it, then I can assess if the pinion length is going to cause driveshaft issues.
