Wal-Mart battery tech

Random tech.

I take lots of short cuts, but I've always spent money on tires and batteries, but I've had a hunch.

3 lines of batteries at Wal-Mart, $50,$75,$95 with different warranties and different colored labels.

I'm selling a 7.3psd for fairly cheap, and need it to start, but cheap.

Group 65, identical case, very similar numbers melted into top, could not discern a pattern.

All 3 made in Mexico.

$50 rated 650 cca
$75 rated 750 cca
$95 rated 700 cca

Get bathroom scale from housewares, all 3 weigh the same, within ounces.

Auto dept was fairly busy, I grabbed the $50 and the $95
And had her test them both, the 50 was 11/19 date code, the newest 95 I could find was 8/19
All batteries tested rated at 700cca
Both tested 894/895cca.

I bought 2 of the 50s
My 2nd 50 also load tested 895cca

After she cleared the line, I grabbed a different $50 group 65 made in S Korea, with different lid and the stupid green eye red eye thing, it had a 10/19 date code

It was also rated at 700, same blue label.

It load tested at 767

It's unlikely I keep this truck long enough for a long term report, unless they get swapped into another 7.3 truck I'm keeping around a bit

YMMV

Good to know. I have a 7.3 IDI I need to sell next month, and will put cheap Wal Mart batteries in it to start, and leave my property, and become someone else's problem.
Thanks

Honestly, at 900cca each, 99% sure made by Johnson controls, in north America vs Asia or Romania, I don't see these as a band aid, I'm not sure if that's what you're implying, or just your truck in general.

If I had to guess, this battery gets all 3 stickers for Wal-Mart, and likely sells with a top shelf label at other retailers.

But, do verify that you're buying the one from better supplier, as I could have picked up the Korean one with 20% less cca, identical part number

I've never seen batteries that cheap at Walmart.

Here they are usually cheaper at Schucks. Sometimes we have to go to Napa for the bigger batteries, like 4 and 8Ds.

couple "econo-power" 65 dollar group 31s for me, sold as no-warranty garbage out of the back of the interstate store
three or four years later and they can still crank my turd of an idi over for a solid ten minutes if you let the starter cool off in between

I needed a group 65 for my truck today and visited Wal-Mart. Sure enough, they had $50, $75, and $95 batteries. I almost tried the $50, but all three said "Made in Korea" so just went with the $95. Cheaper by $40 than O'Reilly...

Well damn. I feel like a schmuck for paying $300 each for my 2 odessey extreme AGMs.. but hell, they start the truck every time. We were at 8 degrees tonight at work and the truck fired right up without hesitating., so that's good I guess.

When I had my car lot, I used the $50 batteries. I financed and never had one die before the car was paid off. I think your hunch about the cost being a warranty difference and not a product difference is correct.

Makes sense. Someone needs to bandsaw a couple open to see inside.

A few months back I killed a few minutes in the auto center, looking at batteries, trying to get a grasp on who makes what, and which batteries are the same with different stickers.

Multiple manufacturers with varying quality
Mexico
Korea
Czheck
May or may not have been a 4th, ending in "ia" or "stan"

Either all 3 made in Mex
Or, the 2 lower were the real foreign and Mex was top, or Mex was top 2 with the offshore for the economy

Clearly in the case of the $50 group 65 from a different manufacturer, they have multiple suppliers for the same sku

You really need to take a half hour and look it over real well, visit a second store, ask them to put their little mid tronics tester on it. Some people might not care, but, I was curious, and buying two batteries, so worth the time investment to me.

No shmuck, 5 years ago I got 2 die hards warrantied, and ponied up another $200 for agm platinum bats in my duramax, they are doing just fine. I'm on strike, haven't worked in a month, not putting $ into a flip truck that I'm not getting a return on. When the Chevy needs batteries, I'll spend an hour researching Wal-Mart agms, down to driving to look at the premium ones elsewhere to see if just re labeled

If you watch for sales they drop below $150 from time to time as well. I scooped up one for our cargo camper and itís been great so far.

well I guess i fucked myself on this one.

car freaked out.
battery looks like shit.
purchased 5/31/17 been in the car for over 50K miles.

oh, and sams club is saying that unless you have a current membership they will not honor the warranty, because they can't do the transaction without.

I told them that was their problem not mine, and that when I showed up I expected my warranty replacement.

they can't deny warranty claims based on a fucking club membership.

so the local place that's a duracell retailer can't do the exchange, because deep down in the duracell warranty it says you have to return it to the retailer that sold it, or call an 800 number and deal with bullshit.

boo duracell.

so I went to sams, pulled a battery in the parking lot, walked in, said it sucked and I wanted a new one, and got a new one.

installed it in the parking lot and drove off.
no hassles.

people in the morning were pricks, people in the afternoon gave no fucks.
lesson?
go when there's no managers present and deal with the guy that gives no fucks.

Bingo. This works at Wal-Mart

At auto part stores you find the low level manager that smells like cigarettes and bad decisions, bet him $20 he can't find a way to warranty it, he always wins and carries it to your car. Have that 20 folded up and ready

I found out about those when the battery on.my $40k firewood processor died after ~2 years.

I was not happy that they put a "reman'd" battery all to save $40.

I can't tell you how many 4.0 starters I've replaced on my "warranty" from like 15 years ago, for a truck I don't even own.

fuck 'em. They're not above charging a premium for a shit part because of warranty, so I gets my money's worth.

there's one guy at the local vatozone that gives no fucks. last I was in he was bitching about his hours being cut.
yep, that's my guy right there.

I just bought the AGM 65s for $150 each with a 5 year warranty.

I didnt have a problem with the $50-$95 batteries going dead, but leaking and corroded terminals. YMMV

swap them out with god's intended lead and grease them up good with silicone grease

also, on the terminals, get the "milspec" ones that are huge and square. They have a 3/8-16 load terminal bolt rather than the dinky 1/4-20 that the cheap ones give you, crimp on eyelet terminals to your cables, again with dielectric in the crimped end (hydraulic cable crimper is $30 from china)
