I called a CHP office to verify it was for all trailers and not just big rigs because I was towing a little quad trailer out to NV and back.
Me: So once I cross over the state line, I have to drop my speed by 10MPH because the roads are un safe?
CHP Lady:
well, california has a lot of twisty freeways and high winds.
Me: and other states dont?
CHP lady: ITS FOR YOUR SAFETY SIR!!!! and hung up.

Obviously, I feel so safe on I5 when the right lane is doing 55 and the left lane is doing 85.

I went to koh and back this year, I did 70 the whole way (about 600 miles one way) with my cab over and car trailer. Fuck chp!

I was worried about towing in California with their stupid laws. Then I realized nobody gave a shit either, I ran 70+ on IH10.

I did laugh my ass off at the signs telling me to turn my a/c off or my truck may overheat on a hill must be a bunch of junk vehicles out west.

I'd have taken it as a sign that there are a bunch of fucking idiots, not junk vehicles.
Who even needs to be told to turn on the heat when it starts getting hot? Dumbasses, that's who.

You accidentally backed your trailer into $473 worth of state property before you left the state, right?

It was a thought, but there was an issue where he also gave me shit about being over length and to get the fook out of his state because he didn't want to red tag me out out of service. Figured I would rather not see him again...

Yep I'm sure it's over capacity for the truck but it would pull it fine if driven properly. The trailer on the other hand weighs about 1500lbs and has 7k worth of axle under it...

It looks like the tires are smashed against the fenders. The axles are bent front just loading that thing I'm sure

Throw a Class 5 hitch on the pickup instead of the crappy factory one, a skid steer trailer with 8k or 10k axles and run it, The setup that guy has going on is definitely bdl worthy at the moment.

See that all the time out here in farm country. Only replace the Dmax with a 97 Chevy 1500 and a messcan white knuckling it down the road with his flashers on.

Sometimes I wonder if people look at an axle and say ďit has 4 wheels just like those other trailers, so itís fine.Ē The number of light duty landscape trailers with bent frames and serious camber issues around mid-TN seems to outnumber those that donít.

I think you covered 70% of most trailer users right there. They look at a 7k trailer and don't see a single difference compared to a 14k or heavier trailer. Just because they're both similar in shape and have 4 wheels does not mean two trailers are the same but the majority does not understand that. It run into people all the time to don't even realize you can get skid steer trailers with more then 7k axles under them as well. They're the same people who figure my dual tandem gooseneck has the same capacity as a semi trailer since they both have 8 tires.

I always had a good trailer, but I may be guilty of the Chevy 1500 part of the scenario

If I can kinda stop it, I may take some liberties.

Its commiefornia.....you aren't allowed to think for yourself. They they think everyone is as brainless as they are so they have to make signs to help you think.

Yep. And while we are on the subject of dumb Commiefornia towing laws, I just found out about a doozy myself the other day on my way out to TDS. Was pulling my redneck toyhauler and a CHP officer with nothing better to do decided to pull me over. His excuse was the rear tires on my tandem looked a little bulged to him so he thought I was overloaded. I happened to have a CAT slip in my console from the last time I had the whole set up weighed. 1,500 lbs below my max tow rating and well under capacity of my twin 7k axles on the trailer. Dude still made me roll onto his mobile scales. I think he was pissed that I was actually legal and not overweight. So in an attempt to find something to get me for he proceeds to go over my trailer top to bottom. Checks my tire pressures, they are good. Finally he finds the GVWR sticker on the tongue (UNDERNEATH the tongue tool box that I keep my straps and shit in). So the trailer is a PJCC20. It has a GVWR of 14,000 lbs on the sticker. Apparently because of that sticker alone, I have to have a non commercial class A to even legally pull it even though it is not loaded to anywhere near that amount and never will be (my truck is rated for a max tow of 10,500) luckily the dude was nice about it and let me go on my way and didnít site me, but thatís still some major bs. Itís a fucking 20 foot tandem axle trailer just like the other thousands all over the road. I bought it because it was beefy as fuck and overkill for what I needed. I like to go bigger in these cases. More built means more better. Bigger axles mean bigger brakes. CHP can

I live in NY and know about the CA 10k trailer cdl requirement. How many rocks do you live under? Apologies if you really are new to things... but you really ought to know the rules of where youíre operating and they donít hide that one at all.

I live in Cali. Been stopped several times towing 10k+ GVW (70mph 'speeding' usually). Never knew that, and never an issue?

What he said.

This is why many trailer places sell trailers with gvwr of 9999
