That weight rating goes on the same tag with the VIN, ask mike_belbin about how well you're treated with a VINless trailer.

It's a Cummins....got 23 mpg in a 70 mph headwind and produced that much extra diesel on a 3000 mile trip.

None of my home built trailers have Vin #'s or weight ratings. Good thing I don't pull them through Commirfornia.

In fact I only have one plate for all 7 trailers.
Since I can't pull more than one trailer at a time, why bother. Their all under 10K.

It's not exactly hard to make your initial trailer registration vague enough so that one plate can cover multiple trailers. God forbid you have to use the same number of axles and paint them all the same color so that the detail match the registration info.

Why would smart people subtract trailer weight from the trailer's gross vehicle weight rating?

The trailer is not VINless. Mine is stamped into the frame and they riveted it on when it was inspected by the WSP. The registration does not list a gross weight anywhere. It lists 2017 as the year it was made. The scale weight, the vin number, home-made and “private use.” No where does it list any gross weight ratings.

Apparently Washington does it different. Lol. Just another reason to dislike California I guess, haha. It’s been all over Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, California and Arizona and no one has mentioned anything yet. Maybe I’m just lucky? Haha.

I'm just saying that you can't take a 14k trailer and slap 14k on it. The trailer has mass. The tongue also takes some weight off the axles. Tongue weight, axle ratings, GVWR of the trailer - all things that joe blow isn't considering when loading or hauling.

Sure, it isn't technically rated for 14k but the whole point of weight ratings is that there's a pretty fat safety margin even at the limit.

The reason it's a 14kgvw and not 14k capacity is so that it when it's worn out from a decade of hard use it will still hold up when you decide to load it to 14k gross and take it off road or drive across the desert at 80mph in the middle of summer.

If you slap 14k on a 14k trailer that isn't completely clapped out and don't take it off road and don't drive in a manner that maximized your chance of getting a blowout you shouldn't have any problems (other than longer stopping distances and faster wear on everything).
