FToy RSA - First Trail, Stage 1
Here we are. Our first wheeling trip into the unknown.
Me, Johan, Ronald, Pieter and Gert challenged Donkerkloof (Dark Gorge for you who do not speak Afrikaans). I have known this area for a while, but never had the vehicle to challenge it. Small gravel roads take you to the entrance where all the CARNAGE started.
This is a gorge running through the Strydpoort mountains ±60km south of Polokwane where we stay. I always wanted to see if we can drive right though to the northern side, and here was my chance. On a previous excursion with Willys Jeeps we drove it to a large boulder complex from the northern side, but could not get through. This time we try from the south.
We left early in the morning, with my FToy in tow behind Ronalds' Toyota Surf with all the bells and whistles.
We called it "DONKERKLOOF CARNAGE", because that is what it was. It rained the night before in town and surrounding area. The flood waters then pass through Donkerkloof. On arrival the stream was a trickle, but got much worse the further we went. Here goes:
On entering the river, I had to try this small rock just for the fun of it. Everything seems to be working nicely.
Johan taking a picture of Pieter, who is taking a picture of Johan. IDIOTS. Canning myself in the back. Note the Captain Morgan Cap and Shirt - Best rum in the world (Double tot with Coke and ice in a beer glass)
Up and over. Due to the wet conditions and sand as riding surface, I had to use the diff locks to get up here. Getting good grip from the 35" tyres in the wet.
Ronald up a incline. He has got a very capable vehicle with 35" BFG Mud Terrain tyres.
Me up the creek. The capability of the vehicle here really started to astonish me. With the right gear and basic knowledge of the line to take, makes it easy and fun.
COULD NOT RESIST IT!!! The words was "Jy gaan VASSIT!!!", i.e. "You're going to get STUCK!!!", "Ja Ja", i.e. "Yeah Yeah", was the reply and I did hang up on the belly plate. TOUGH!!!
Rock behind me that blocked my escape. Bullied it a bit and got out. Got off the belly plate again and carried on. Great fun though.
OOPS. Flat tyre. Luckily a rock only pushed it of the rim on the inside. High lift jack and ARB compressor resolved the issue.
