Anyone ever made an FJ40 hybrid hard/soft top?

For some reason the concept of a hard roof soft sided top has always piqued my interest as a good compromise.

Just wondering if anyone has ever taken a stock fiberglass roof and mounted it to their windshield in the front/cage in the rear. Seems like having soft sides made from there would be pretty simple.

I'm just thinking out loud right now. Too much on my plate to do anything with the idea right now.

I can't say I've thought about it, but what I can say is that the hard top generates enough lift to take itself completely up and off the truck at about 40 mph. I'm not sure how that will affect drivability...

Seem to remember someone doing a half an half top, front was a hard top and the rear was soft

I have thought about doing the same thing, and would love to see it done. I remember seeing a picture of someone who had mounted a hardtop without the sides, but I haven't seen it done with soft sides.

I have a picture of a 40 from Canada with just the fiberglass hard top on over the roll cage. It looked pretty cool. I'm not sure if they had built soft sides for it or just always ran it open. Pretty sure the picture came from that other website. The problem is, my computer with all my old 40 pictures is in storage a thousand miles away.

Maybe it's the color match vs. white, but it doesn't look as cool as I thought it would.

From this thread I found on 'mud: Using hard top bikini style | IH8MUD Forum
