Birfield Inner Race Dis-assembly issues

Servicing my front axle for the first time...

I cannot for the life of me get the ball bearings out of the inner race on my birf joint. When I push the inner race and cage all the way to one side and try to get the balls out, it just seems like the race is not going down far enough in the opposite direction to allow the balls out... I have tried on both and same issue so it's not specifically one birf giving me trouble it's both.. Is there a magic trick that i'm unaware of?

I have the FSM and am doing it exactly as it states to... These are 30spl longs if that matters.

Never done it on longs but on stock birfs mine never just fall out on their own. I use a flat head screwdriver to gently pop the first one out. After that the rest come out much easier.

They can be a PITA once well worn.

You are trying to do it right though. Just give it a bit more love.

Thanks for this, I searched youtube last night but didn't find anything good.. this one is pretty straight forward. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RTYUzboaL_U

.. but HOLY SHIT That is WAYYY different than the FSM states. No where does it say get out a BFH and beat the shit out until they pop out.

This is a big help, I was using some leverage to force the race downward but obviously not enough.

Kind of an old thread, but it's probably best to have all this 30-spline disassembly stuff in the same place.

I got the balls out of my (10 year old) 30 spline Longfields, but can't get the star out of the race. The video above indicates one just has to turn the star 'till in lines up with the holes in the race, but I can't get the star to turn now that I have it out of the birf. Ideas?

BTW, can the RCV 30-spline rebuild kit be used to rebuild original 30-spline Longs?

Great question, my OG 30 spline Longfields are making a bunch of noise.

I found a thread by DaveZ indicating the answer is 'yes'. I think I'm just going to order two new RCV joints, and use my surviving Longfield as a spare.

Thanks man. I placed an order with another vendor just a couple of minutes before I saw your post. Pass the offer along to the next guy!
