toyota axles?

i have an 88 samurai that I'm putting a 4.3 vortec in with th-350 trans. right now trying to decide to go with toyota axles or half ton chevy axles. would like to stay with yota axles if i can but will they hold up to the power from the motor? need some help guys thanks

Yes, they’ll hold up but will want to replace front shafts and Birfelds.

Tire size and driving style is the question? X2 on they are stronger than 1/2 ton axles.

Saying one pair of axles is stronger than the next is a very broad statement.

Stock to stock

D44/12b

Pros:
stronger housings
Much wider=no stupid wheel spacers and offset wheels=stronger steering
Bigger r&p's
Cheaper to source (in my area)
Slightly better brakes

Cons:
Tiny 19 spline stubs
12b has tiny weak shafts and c clips, so when it breaks your tire falls off
When you break a ujoint, 1 of 2 or both can happen. Your shaft ears catch the ball joints and cause the ball joint on fail, which again causes the tire to separate from the vehicle, or it causes the inner shaft to shear and the little spline piece to get stuck in the diff, making a field repair next to impossible.
High steer can be a pain.
Locking hubs are either weak or expensive

Toyota pros:
Rear axles are very strong
Removable 3rds make regearing or carrying spare gears easy
Much better locking hubs
Sheet metal housings are easy to fab off of for links or hydro steering
High steer arms bolt on
Light weight

Cons:
Weak r&p
Weak housings
Narrow width

Toyotas hold up pretty good with a set of cromo front birfs and shafts. I swear every time I wheel with someone with a 44 it breaks, chromo or not.

@YotaAtieToo: yeah I've heard a lot of good things about yota rears and the hubs. about how much wider do you think they are compared to stock samurai axles? and can you tell me more about birfs? this is my first custom off road build so I'm still learning some things, but I've heard a lot of people saying to change these on toyotas? i also as of now am planning to run hydro steer. pretty easy? can i use a stock gm power steering pump to power? cheap or expensive? and i also plan to run a 4 link set up. a friend of mine that has done plenty of these builds is gonna help me set that up. but if you have any advice on that anything would be helpful to me

@iwannabemro i plan on running around a 36-37 inch tire and for now this is just a trail/mud toy. want to possibly get into climbing later on but just want to stick to the trails and hit some mud in it for now. and i don't dog my stuff. ill get on it when i have to but i don't pin it every time i ride lol
