85 Red Truck Evolution

Well, since PB killed my other threads across other forums, I decided to document my current and future modifications here along with any constructive criticisms that may come about.

I have had this truck since Feb 2010 and it has had a few different steps along its lifetime to get where it is now.

From there I had to address a few things. Shitty approach angle and more flex in the front end. I also wanted an Automatic, an Atlas, Full Hydro, lower my seat mounts, modify my tube bead, chop down my sliders and find some decent 17" bead locks. I just didn't realize it would take 8 months to do all of this on my own.

I got this idea from Alex (thewhiteshadow) on running my upper link outside the frame rail to eliminate some clearance issues.

That leaves me where I am now..

The Chinese 40s I had weren't cutting it especially trying to keep up with my friends on stickies. I stumbled onto a deal from a friend and picked up these 39" Reds.

Wooooooooo! Looking good Chris.

Are you planning on tying in some sort of belly skid or subframe once you link the rear?

That is where I'm kind of undecided. I really want to chop off the frame and fully tube it out and build it off of that. I think that is where I want to start and link it from there keeping my current wheelbase of 120. It would look a lot cleaner than hacking up what I currently have and having to work around my frame rails.

Sucks photobucket messed up all our our builds. I didn’t have one on here, but my others are pretty much gone. Planning on making one on here now once I get my pics off PB.

Glad to see you finally plan to link this thing!

The more I think about it i may have some room to tie in something like you described. Here is a shot from the rear. The Trans skid is skinned with some 3/16 AR500 plate.

I still have an Atlas tail shaft support mount to put in that I haven't gotten to yet. I will have to incorporate something into it or around it. I just don't like how the Atlas is exposed.

PSC Full Hydro

Orbital position with some core support trimming.

Blue Torch Ram Mount was way too tall and had to be cut down to optimize the steering arm angles.

I added an extensions each end of the mount in order to fit 4 clamps for the ram. FYI the older clamps (black bolts) have a fine thread pitch and the newer ones (silver bolts) are coarse thread. I don't know why PSC changed these..

Finished product with the PSC XR 2.5 x 8" Ram and some 1.5" DOM .25 WT runners notched to fit the base of the mount. At least the Ram is protected. The arms are still a little more exposed than I would like. I still may add some additional tube to protect them down the road.

Just tie in the lower 4 frame side link mounts (once the rear is linked) with some tube and interlocking tube clamps or flanges, chop your current skid into just the transmission tail housing mount, & profit.

In all seriousness I would try and get away from having a any drivetrain mount sharing responsibilities as a way to mount the skid plate. Skids mounted to the drivetrain are a recipe for breaking the cast aluminum that keeps the unicorn farts inside the auto tranny (even if they share a mount connected to the frame)

Note taken. I kinda did this on the fly without too much input... It may have to get all reworked anyways once I try to cram that 1UZ in the engine bay. I wont be lucky enough to have the trans and TC live in its current location. If that's the case I will cram a sheet metal dash in and chop the firewall out for some clearance.

A340F and Atlas II

A340F from a 2002 Tacoma with a 3.4 V6/ AA 50-5710 Adapter/ Atlas II 4.3. I used a bell housing and flex plate from an A340H which was behind a 22R, and the 3.4 Torque converter which came with the transmission. The Atlas is clocked down one position from flat for drive shaft/frame rail/dip stick and transmission skid clearance. One long and heavy SOB. A transmission jack was the only way to get the whole unit up as an assembly. When i eventually swap in the 1UZ, all I will have to change is the bell housing, input and pump assembly from an A341, Torque converter and flex plate (fingers crossed)

Big ass gaping hole in the floorboard. Atlas breather is routed to the engine bay. The other 2 lines are go to/from the trans cooler. I axed the radio and used some stainless sheet metal for a switch panel.

Front 3 Link

Just thought I would share some of the pics from my front 3 Link. I sacrificed a little by not redoing the front frame rails and mounting my upper link out side of the DS frame rail. Does it work?...Yes. Could it have been designed and executed Better? Yes.

do you miss the fact that your truck is no longer streetable and you have to trailer your rig every where you go? or do you feel like this was the natural progression of things for you?

Why is it no longer streetable?

It is very streetable now. With a few needed additions, it would pass inspection here in TX. I just don't feel like wearing out my Reds on the pavement.

I have more fun on wheeling trips now than I ever did before due to the fact that I don't have to worry about driving it back home. So yes you could say it was a natural progression.

I cleaned the truck about a week ago up and installed a new set of body mounts from Energy Suspension that I found when I was cleaning up in the garage. The 33 year old mounts were in pretty bad shape. I also installed a new oil pan did an oil change since the old pan was beat to shit and had a crack around the drain plug that like to make a mess. Then went and did a full nut and bolt check on the front and rear suspension and re-torqued all the bead locks. I should be all set for some wheeling at the end of the month and in March.

I also got started on pulling the 1UZ from the 93 SC400 donor that I found locally. The weather turned pretty bad here this weekend and I didn't get it completed. Should have it in hand and on the engine stand by next week hopefully. That will give me some time for the new motor parts to show up. (NGK spark plugs, wires, OEM distributor caps/rotors, Aisin water pump, timing belt, belt tensioner and idler pulleys). Then I will tear into that project.
