Toys or 60s

Time to get flamed!

Per the price point. I'm having a hard time deciding between the two. Due to my group of friends and goals. The tire size will be 35s. I however have a heavy foot, I will floor it until something happens. I'm also not a fan of breaking. Figure a typical 80s toyota pickup with mid 90s 4.3l power. Drop doesnt matter because the second case is a d300.

I have 2 sets of toyota axles and a fj80 missing knuckles out.

All things considered, I've figured lockers, shafts, rebuild pretty even between the two.

This is where is snowballs. I want to be wider than stock. But not full width on 35s. Somewhere in the ~61-63" range. Ideally I was thinking tacoma rear (8.4) with a custom front housing, rcvs, hp8, diamond knuckle/steering, and your typical upgrades.

On the other hand, I could buy a SD 99-04 axle for <$500, cut down long side for a 29 or 31.5 pad width and be right there in my target width. 6 lug unit bearings. Could even be trick and run a rear axle with cups and the same bearing. 35 spline outers and hubs/flanges. This option wasn't necessarily viable until the past few years.

I'm torn between the weight/clearance and the opportunity to do 2nd/3rd gear drops with the hp8/8.4.

Just looking for second opinions, someone to call me dumb, and other things I havent considered.

Built Toyota axles will hold up pretty well on 35s. If you really plan to stay on 35s, I would say go that route.

However, the "floor it until something happens" lends it's self more towards 60s.

Yep, I'll saw the wheel or back up and make a run till I go somewhere. 9/10 times I prefer to go low/low and let it eat.

Also crossed my mind. I've tried to buy built thirds on here but always 5 minutes late. I have catastrophically blown up 9s. Two custom housings, built 3rds, etc really doubles the budget.

My truck is 80" wide tire to tire on 37x12.5s on stock srw 1 tons, shaved rear 14 bolt. How narrow overall do you want to be?

About 6" narrower.

I went the diamond route 10 years ago on 35s. Other than one pinion gear, I still havent broken them. I am extremely happy with these axles.

With that said, I couldnt get an 05+ sd 60 for a reasonable price 10 years ago. All things being equal, Id strongly consider a 60.

Replined shafts from Branik are $75. You wont need anything but stock shafts with any engine that Toyota makes.

Stock > Custom

You build the 60s and thats done. Just maintenance. You can go bigger tires, and more power, or drive how you want. You build Toyotas and then you have to drive with sense, keep the tire size down, and no more power for you! You get all of this for the low low price of more than double what 60s cost!

If you’re going to go 60s I’d look into the 05 and up super dutys with a set of 16+shafts to get the 1580 joints. New from Ford they are only like 175 per side for a complete shaft. Get that 45 degrees of steering. There is a junk yard here in Houston that sells the 05 and up axles for 400 a pop. Can’t beat that shit.

I'd do a 60 front and a Taco or 9 rear. A d60 in stock form out performs a Toy axle in every way except clearance. I ran a Dodge d60 up front narrowed to 64 for years. At that width it fit right into stock Toyota spring hangers. It was in the truck for 10 years and broke less parts than the last 2 years I was on toy axles.

Ive been on the lookout for another KP, no luck yet.

What were you breaking? Curious to know why you say a taco rear would suffice, but a 60 front is necessary.

I would love to rock that shit in a spring under truck/runner. Big meats, good brakes, low gearing, no need for dual case shit, automatic friendly, all wrapped up in a small light axle combo.

I broke a few shafts and u-joints, stripped the splines out of a drive flange. I also run 40" stickies and if it doesn't crawl a trail in 2 attempts I grab more gear and hammer on it.

A D60 turns further stock, is stronger and has more aftermarket and even stock support. Considering its going to cost the same amount to build either roughly for your application and you wont be at the end of your upgrades. My Mini truck axle was OK on 35's and a absolute mess on 37's. If you look hard enough D60 can be had cheap. I've never paid more than $350 for one. Word is the newer BJ ford 60's can be had for $400 complete all day long.

Taco rear axle or 9inch shouldn't be a issue. They don't run on the coast side of the gear set. Both the Toyota and D60 front do though. I'd have built a 9 for the back of my new rig if I didn't already have a geared/locked 14b. I really never had issue breaking rear axle parts the fronts though everything broke.
