Sealing rear wheel well after trimming 4runner fenders

Just picked up an 85 4runner on the weekend and just going through it fixing shotty work by the PO. One of the rear wheel wells is rusted a bit at the lip and was planning on just zip cutting it out for clearnace etc, but haveing a closer look that cavity behind the fender goes through the whole 1/4. So when cutting the rear opening out how do you guys seal up that cavity? Hammer that inner wheel well up and weld it to the inside 1/4 again?

pretty much. i cut my fenders up to 1/4" below level with the high side of the inner fenders. fit up some sheet metal to go from inner to outer fender and rolled the 1/4" under and welded it up. small bit of seam sealer for the pin holes and a bunch of years later im still good. it helps that cars don't rust here.

Right on bud, ya up here in Canada we can have issues with rust. Cant complain too much for a $750 4runner that runs great with a set of headers, rear locker and recent head gasket. Will post a build once i get into it with my old duals and axles etc.
