Unhappy 22RE Noise/Knock

I know there is some old info on this site from about 8 years ago but am wondering if anyone might have fresh ideas. Looking for some cheap/easy ways to narrow down what I might be facing with my 91 Toyota 4x4 22re. there is a noise/knock in the motor. From low RPM to high RPM it changes. Low to mid RPM is noisy mid to high it goes away. When you drive it's louder starting out, but when at cruising speed, RPM's up, really can't hear it. When you let the engine do a compression brake upon stopping it gets really loud....any ideas?

Broken timing chain guides...?
Chain gets tight upon higher rpms, and isn't hitting the cover

It has the metal chain guides so would hope it didn't break one of those. Last August toyota did the oil pump seal, valves and cam because the cam ate itself. I'm hoping that whatever this is will be related to the warranty on that work. It sounds like it could be related to valves or something in that area but I'm not very familiar with that type of engine work so am just guessing.

T/C chain tensioner stuck? Drop in a qt of atf and drive around the block a couple times. Drain and refill oil and repeat.

Did you use RTV doing the work last summer? I once had a tiny piece of RTV clog the tensioner and cause my timing chain to slap.
