Misery Loves Company- Xcab Race Truck Turned 4 Seat Crawler

Hey all. Have been around the board a decently long while, here and there as my needs for research have dictated.

Decided it's time to start sharing my current build. Hopefully you guys can help keep the fire lit under my ass to actually get this damn thing finished and out to the woods.

Going to try and catch it starting from the beginning. May take several posts to do so.

Will start with a few "Then" pictures in it's race truck form:

Sold my previous crawler, an 88 4Runner, (https://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/toyo...lowrunner.html) after deciding it was cursed in my hands. Never made it through a trip without a debilitating breakage, and was always worried about all the glass and tin it had. Plus it was HEAVY.

Decided the race truck was as good a candidate as any to make a more appropriate wheeler, so the tear down started. Approximately March of '17.

Preemptively bought tires.

Started sizing up where I thought I wanted them.

Decided that front sheet metal and the frame forward of the motor mounts was all stupid.

So was having a complete floor. And the belly hanging below the frame.

Decided to buck the trend and got my head stuck on going shackles forward.

Chop Chop

Stuck some wheels back on the axle and gave it a whirl with the cherry picker to check for any MAJOR feckups.

PLENTY of cab clearance.

Gave my newly assembled Rogue Fab bender a whirl with some sliders and a front bar, to start with.

Then a B-Pillar and some cross bracing. I'm 6'4" with a long torso and these trucks are already small, so the decision was to go with a mostly Exo-type cage around what was left of the sheet metal.

I have to admit, for my first multiple bend part, it came out okay. Only a touch out of plane for the third and fourth bends.

Was going with an overly complex, minimum to no bends type rear cage/bed scenario.

That turned out to be an abortion. So I cut it off and took another swing.

Then this asshole shows up. My good buddy who is quite fond of giving me great/bad/expensive ideas. He says he has a pile of link parts and Coilovers that he hasn't gotten around to using, and he will make me a sweet deal on them. Well.....feck.

So I go an pick up said parts from homeboy. Start dicking with the link calculator and start tacking stuff together.

Decide that even more of the frame is useless at this point. And that I was unhappy with some of the bar work, again. Chop goes the weasel once more.

My lovely missus mentions to me that it's going to be hard to get our family of four into a two seat x-cab.

Uhhhh, you guys want to be able to go with?

Le Sigh.

So I gutted EVERYTHING out of the cab. Pedal box, column, harness, etc. Anything and everything that is reliably reusable on the new firewall of what is apparently going to be a four seat tube chassis.

So, that brings us up to today. I'm currently dicking with remounting the sliders to the frame. Making sure they are good and square to the frame, world, etc so I can start at the firewall portion of the new stuff and work out from there.

I welcome, appreciate, and enjoy constructive criticism.

"Abortion" and "dicking". Yep you're on the right track. Have fun.

Most of my planning has been in crayon. On paper that I later step on with boots soaked in 90w.

Really though. Ive had DOZENS of plans written down, drawn up in various media. Only to decide or realize later that they are: overcomplicated, overcomplex for my skill set, completely unneeded, or in the case of my lovely bride deciding she wants to be able to bring the kids, a complete fawking surprise. I probably could/should have decided to just get a different chassis and start over, but I'd be 100% out on my current progress and have nothing but a pile of parts to use. Thus my taking a swing at the jungle gym idea. I got into a pile of tube at around $3/ft when I decided to exo it, and bought enough to be able to sell some to recoup the funds. Now they will just become MY buggy instead of somebody else's stuff.

What color interior was that truck? What do you have left, willing to sell?

Well, have been trying to plug away at this thing. Got a front clip hoop bent up, first attempt sucked. Called in a buddy to help me figure out what was going on. After a few Emails with Bend Tech, got it all sorted out. While I was at it, I went ahead and upgraded to the PRO version with the sheet metal and plate template modules so I can make more of my own parts.

Anyhow, here's the firewall/cowl and front clip bar I finally got figured out.

And since I've upgraded programs, here's what I've been tinkering with over the last few hours before I go to work for the night.

Thanks dood. I am using lens dump for the image hosting, and they don't have an option between these "medium" picture links, and HUGE, horizontally scrolling size images.

If there's a free option I missed for hosting, let me know!
