Bucking 4 runner

I am 17 and building my first wheeler. I have an 86 4runner with a SAS and 35s. It used to run great, but now in the morning it wont idle when its cold, and when its warm it bucks off the line, and REALLY bucks and surges going uphill in 1st gear.

I have replaced the cap and rotor, checked the timing, and replaced the o2 sensor and fuel filter and it still sucks. HELP!

Uphill makes it sounds like a fuel pump.
Have you looked into that?

Fuel filter, or coolant temp. Just another place to look.

Check the rubber intake boot very closely.

Tell us about the motor. Stock? Mods or anything? And how long you've had it. Is it very cold out when the problem occurs? And I take it the motor is fuel injected.

Not radiator. Coolant temp sensor. If that's out of range, it can throw it off.

How are the RPM's? Do the surge up or down or both? Vacume is a good one like turbohaulic said or maybe intake gasket? Use starting fluid or carb cleaner to test the lines and intake.

I had the same thing, check my previous posts for everything I tried and start there, it ended up being my ecu. Could be a lot of things, get ready to get your multimeter out to test stuff. Is it throwing codes?

I checked all the vaccume lines and thier all good and I ajusted my throttle cable because it was loose but none of that changed anything it seems like when i start the truck that it electrically wants to keep staring even tho its already running. just another related problem that might help with figure out whats making the bucking and surging when going up hill or shifting into first.

thanks for the help

Had the same kinda problems with my 91 crawler....would idle fine and rev but when under any load it would surge and bog. I never did pin point the problem before I said F it and went to propane but I'm sure it was the fuel pump. Everything checked out and no change when I soaked the thing in starting fluid.

I would try another pump even if your connection seems good, the sock could be gummed up as well.

Igniter/coil. You can ohm them out per the FSM but mine was BAD and had resistance values within spec.

I say check the AFM. The non idle when cold sounds like Cold start Injector is not coming on, and bucking in 1st, sounds like lack of fuel delivery.
