2016 SlickRock Trail conditions

Slickrock usually opens 5/1 each year.

I haven't been up skiing lately, so I don't know the snow level & how much has melted off (other than a few webcams).

Some non wheeling friends want to camp at Utica next weekend (5/6-5/8) & I'm wondering if the trail is do-able, as well as if Utica/Union are covered in snow.

Was hoping some of the guys who live in Arnold & there abouts want to chime in.

Road was still closed leading down to utica, still has the concrete traffic barrier across it. I drove up around around the back way ( lake alpine ) about 16" of fresh snow on the road leading to the trail head, this was Saturday morning. Didn't look doable. I saw about 4 buggies heading up when i was leaving they may have cleared a path..

I also heard but have not confirmed that the Alpine side needs a reroute due to a sale of private property.Trail goes through this private property and new owner will not allow access to trail.Apparently the FS never had an easement.:shaking:

"SLICK ROCK TRAIL PROPOSED
REROUTE
The Slick Rock 4x4 Trail is located
near Lake Alpine in Stanislaus
National Forest and was adopted by
the Joaquin Jeepers in the 1960’s. A
parcel of private property near Lake
Alpine adjacent to the trail has been
sold. The Forest Service has tried but
has been unable to obtain an easement
and the current owner does not
seem interested in giving the Forest
Service an easement. The new owners
have asked that the trail be rerouted
away from their property.*This
property has been a problem for
years and the same thing happened
occurred 15 years ago. Then Joaquin
Jeepers working with the OHV Trail
Coordinator in the Calaveras Ranger
District spent many hours scouting out
a trail for a potential reroute, but in the
end due to some personnel changes
in the Forest Service, the reroute was
never authorized.
The Calavaras Ranger District has
already been scouting the area and
will be seeking to obtain a grant from
the OHMVR division for the potential
reroute and will start working on the
project in the spring once the snow
has melted."

i dont understand how perspective easement doesnt apply to this trail

Quote:

Prescriptive Easement

A prescriptive easement is created when a person uses land of another, without the landowner’s consent, in such a way that the landowner should reasonably be aware of, and does so for a continuous period of five years. The most litigated concept here is continuity of use. Continuous use does not mean constant use. The use need only be as frequent as is appropriate given the nature of the easement and the character of the land. Particularly in rural areas, occasional or seasonal use of an easement may be sufficient. Because action is a factor in the creation of this type of easement, no writing is required.

It is also a county rd. They may be rerouting it as a favor / request and not due to legal issues.

this made it seem as a legal issue

Went up there last weekend. Hwy 4 is still closed at the winter closure point at Lake Alpine. Tried to make it into the trail head from Spicer Road. Ran into 2-4 foot snow drifts on the gravel road leading to Union & Utica Reservoirs. We never made it to the trail head since it was getting late in the afternoon and the weather was turning ugly. Probably going to take a couple weeks of warm, sunny, weather before the trail will be accessible.

46WILYZ 05-15-2016 12:52 PM

The pass is open, spicer road is plowed, and I seen several of rigs heading up this weekend, but I have to work. Hopefully someone will have a trail report.

axlebear 05-18-2016 07:39 AM

Anyone have confirmation if trail is accessible from Lake Alpine, or does this private property issue block the trail? Was planning to run it this weekend.

We were up there 5/21-5/22. Entered from the South (Spicer), trail was snow blocked at the North end. Was a great day. We went probably 7/8 of the way up through, then turned around and came back and exited at Spicer. Had a little snow and hail to liven things up. Best trip up there in a long while.

What a blast it was this weekend!!!! A lot of people up there this weekend , def not happy with trail conditions. I picked up three bags of trash off the trail on Saturday alone.
Never really encountered that before there.... Was a great time though. Broke a lower link right off the bat, sleeved it with my high lift handle...chunked on some angle iron to help, wheeled all over hell and back sat, sun, and Monday .

It looks as if this might blow over, please please if u come down from alpine side stay ON THE TRAIL!!! Or any trail for that matter, the new owners are cool and seem reasonable ,just don't want the property thrashed, understandably.

(Private) Property rights are big with me.

Can we offer a good will gesture/some preventable maintenance?

Maybe do some rocks, fencing & signage (like we did at the meadow a few years ago)?

If we show the new owners that the real wheelers are there to help, they should be much more agreeable.

I would be happy to help if such a thing happens. I'm not affiliated with any club and I don't get out on the trails as much as I'd like to anymore, but something like this would be as good of an excuse as any for me to point my rig up the hill and donate some time to the cause. I really enjoy visiting that area.

46WILYZ 06-05-2016 06:59 AM

We ran the trail yesterday, and had a great time. As we drove through the private property area, you cannot help but notice all the granite in that area. A reroute maybe great for the trail, depending on how they route it, and the possibility of a gatekeeper obstacle.

geberhard 06-09-2016 10:30 AM

Great to hear and awesome that the new owners seem like great people and open to partner up and allow access trough the area; definitely a great gesture from them and we would be glad to help out on the trail and by their property with any need.

Planning to hit the trail, how were the trail conditions?

Thank you!

Gui

Slickrock in California is a beautiful trail! We got to pick up some trash throughout the trail, but the most disappointing thing was finding trash through the road and camping areas left by others. Please remember to pack in and pack out!
