Best/fastest way to get to Harlan KY

I've been there a number of times, seems like I always end up taking a new route. Some better some worst. I generally take 81S to exit 1 gate city us 421 alternate and run that to 421. Then I remember there is a way to go around Powell mountain by staying straight at Pennington gap? I can't remember all the details. One time I went threw Bristol and one time I came in the back side of everts (worst route possible) what's the best way in and out?

I usually stop for fuel, booze, and groceries in gate city, Bristol or Kingsport. Then take 58 out of gate city to 421, 421 through Pennington gap to Harlan, then 38 into evarts.

Had a few buddies come in from the north and come into Harlan from the Putney side.

I've also heard that coming directly into evarts the opposite way on 38 is terrible.

The worst part of 421 is the 180 degree switchback at 15 mph using both lanes.

LOL, I just got back. Best way I've figured is 81S to 26W to 58 then continue on 58alt in duff field and ride that around to big stone gap then run 58 alt to pennington gap. Then 421 the rest of the way in. 4 lane road on 58 ALT and avoid the big mountain. We had a guy take the 58 route in abington this trip which is 58 to 23 in norton then 58 alt around. Said it wasn't bad just a slow go (55 MPH). I have taken rt 38 into the back of everts and yes its the worst route ever. 2 hours of straight 180 degree 10 MPH switchbacks.

Gotcha, may try that next time.

The big mtn on 421 is a damn pull. I've done 17mph up it with my old 6.0 suburban. I can at least do 45ish now with the 8.1. That's gasser problems though.

I'm interested in taking 58 alt the next trip up just to check it out.
