I have heard that the 14 bolt is too heavy and also hangs down too far. The part of the diff that hangs down, can you just grind that part off and get back about an inch in clearence. If this is not true just let me know. Also would value all of your opinion on wether to go with a dana 60 or 14 bolt on a tj.

You could, but why? It would be allot of work.
I'm seeing articles where they cut them out like the D60 and trim the ring gear, again, I'm not sure it's worth all that. Waay too much axle for a Jeep. It's big in all the wrong areas, except axle shaft size.

i run a 14bolt in my jeep and yes you can grind the big lip off the bottom. what other locker is there other than a detroit??? the detroit for a 14bolt is also like $200 less than a dana60 detroit. 5.13's not low enough? not many people run lower than 5.13's. i run 62" wide full floatting 14bolt with 1.5" shafts that came that way stock. see if you can find a d60 like that. i only paid $150 for it too. you can keep your rear 60's i like my 14bolt.

If you really need something like a 60 might as well go to a cheaper and stronger 14 bolt. Is it to much for your jeep? I don't know but if you need more then a 44 might as well go all the way to the 14 bolt. There is alot of material that can be taken off of the bottoms and if you are running big tires it doesnt matter as much anyhow

for a locker i want to go arb is there much of a difference in price between the arb for the d60 or the 14 bolt. 38' tires is what i want to run so i guess the 1 or 2 in on the 14 bolt wont really matter too much.

Go to the junkyard & whatever you stumble across first, go with it. I like the 14 bolt myself, detroit is the only way to go.

That is what i was going to do. I thought about going with a detroit, but then I started thinking (there I go thinking agian, man I have to stop doing that) no really now i did want to go with a dertoit but In the snow on the road I was under the inpression that it isn't all that good to be locked up, so i would like to be under control of if it is locked up or not. I agree on being locked up off road, but an arb will give you the best of both worlds wouldn't you agree.

I was going to go with a 14bolt at first and run 36" tires, but the guy I was buying it from told to not bother with it cause I would drag a$$ all over the place. His advice was to run a 38" tire minimum for ground clearance reason.

yea, 14 bolts are like freaking 9 1/4s how they hang LOW. the full floater is a major plus, but if you can run some large tires. What size were you planning to run on your TJ?

there is only a 1/2" difference between my shaved front dana60 and my rear shaved 14bolt. shave them and run 38's. you'll have plenty of clearance.

Know-it-all newbies... Derr its the new trend git wit da times! A detroit for a 14 bolt is the cheapest on the market! It doesnt replace the full carrier so its less junk you have to buy. True it only goes up to 5.13 big fawkin deal unless you have a stock motor

Yeah too much for a jeep Another newbie spouting off useless negative worthless info to up the post count... How many 14 bolts have YOU seen break??? They are a lot of axle and they do hang low but lock it all up and it wont matter drag it across anything and dont worry about it. With axles that big just gas it and go
