Having your MAF mounted like that will cause gravity to hold the flap open further than it should be and cause weird runability issues. You should try to mount it as close to the stock orientation as possible.

Build looks great.
Thanks. Not really enough real estate to run it in stock orientation. I'll address it if there are runability issues. Thanks for the heads up.

More CAD work. Inner fenders are done, in cardboard form, for both sides. Now to transfer to metal.






Also, my gauges came in. GPS Speedo with tach and turn signal indicators. Temp and oil pressure, and the fuel gauge is programmable to the cj sending unit. Woot woot!

Thanks. Lots of welding and metal shaping, fitting, and forming in my near future.

Made some progress tonight. I finished cutting panels for the inner fenders, not really pic worthy.

I also married the YJ sending unit and the Toyota fuel injection pump. Modified the bracketry quite a bit. Pic is boring, but I'm proud of knocking this little project out.

I went over to my friends shop this morning and started bending the panels for the inner fenders. After lunch I threw together the drivers side, it had fewer panels than the passenger side. Some slight adjustments with a deadblow and I was in business. The passenger side is far more complicated and will be tackled tonight I hope.



And the panels for the passenger side awaiting assembly.

Inner fenders are pretty much fabricated. I had about an hour into the drivers side. All in all, the passenger side took 7 hours, but now it's all mocked up.

That is cheating! I thought you where going to weld all those seams...

Haha, thanks. I wish I had your tig skills, then I might try welding all of those seams.

It will all get welded. I will do a full teardown, clean, etch, and prime each panel. Then punch holes in the flanges for spot welds. Then align panels, remove primer from adjoining panels where the holes line up and weld it up. Spot welds will be spaced about 2 inches apart. That's pretty much how the entire tub was welded.

Time to get this thread up to date. Made up some cowl steps a while back. They won't be used as a step, just a support bracket for the rear of the front fender. The mounting flanges and the outside edge are 1"x1/8" flat bar that was laying around. I formed the radius by hand-bending around a piece of 1-1/2" pipe, until I was happy with the look. The top is 14g sheetmetal. The step is also going to be bolted on to the outside of the aluminum armor.

The cage has also been finish welded, just needs to be cleaned and painted.




Also started working on the aluminum armor. 3/16" T6-6061 aluminum on the rockers. Also on the inside of the tub to add rigidity to the "s" door opening and to provide a backer for the body handle. Mounted with countersunk bolts, for ultimate smoothness... I also bolted up the cowl step that doubles as support for the rear of the front fender.

Drove to Tucker, GA the other day and picked up some new to me wheels. A set of MT Classic 2s in the 15x8 flavor. Called the tire shop down the road and they quoted $25 per tire to mount my 37s. I decided to do it myself and about an hour and a half later I was done, I was a sweaty beat mule, but I was done.



I've also been drilling a crap-ton of holes lately, trying to get all of the armor mounted up. Stout Fabrication out in Vegas bent up my corners out of 6061 aluminum. I couldn't find anyone semi local to do it so I gave them a call. It was a custom order, just blanks, no holes, and done right the first time. Saved me money, time and materials. I didn't want full side armor, just trail corners, has kind of a nostalgic feel to it.





Progress shots. As it sits right now with the 37s mounted, I'm looking at 21" of clearance to the flat belly. Top of the rear corner is 47.5" and the top of the cage will be 71.5". Those numbers are without the cage mounted. The weight of the cage will probable drop those heights by about an inch.

Still plugging away. I got the tail lights mounted up. Used a 4-1/8" holesaw for the cutout. The drill was not too happy, nearly let all of the smoke out of a relatively new Makita, smh. The light is a stop, tail, turn and reverse all in one. Think it's originally for a semi, made by a company called Grote. I mounted it from behind....lmao....so it gives it a frenched in look.

I wasn't real happy with my intake, so I decided to fix it now instead of later. I ordered up an Airaid DIY intake tube kit, some silicone couplers and some nice hose clamps. I put the MAF sensor where I wanted it, then proceeded to build to it from the throttle body. It fit nice and should hold up well. I still need to build a support bracket, but I'll do that after I move the alternator to the passenger side, and lower the PS pump down to where the alternator is currently. I'm going to lower the PS pump so that my huge PSC reservoir will fit under the hood.










Also got my tube fenders welded up and primered. Still need to drill some holes but this will keep them from rusting on me. One mor can of filler primer and I should get a nice clean radius where I welded the sheet to the tube.

Yesterday was a productive day, and some of the most fun I've had working on the rig in the last couple weeks. I really enjoy making brackets for some strange reason. Anyway, I had to mount my PSC power steering reservoir and there was a few limitations:

#1: the output on the reservoir needed to be higher than the intake on the pump

#2: away from the header as much as possible

#3: as close to the pump as possible (needed a little distance for the hose, for flex purposes bc the pump is engine mounted and the reservoir is fender mounted)

#4: fit it under the hood

This is what I was working with.


I decided to do some CAD work to get a good visual.




After doing some of the other type of CAD work, I ended up with this.


A bend here and there and some fancy holes I had made this. TADA!


Bolted up. Coil is also mounted now. Just need a support for the MAF sensor and a splash shield for the filter and it's almost time for teardown.
