Looking good! I can see we have a lot of the same ideas with our builds. IE: Y-pipe and exhaust ran down the driver side.

What are you doing for a radiator?

I would have to look, but I think I still have at least one driveshaft flange, if not two. Ill have to look to be sure. Would you want it or them?

thanks! yeah I actually looked at the underside of a chevy 1500 truck to get an idea of how they routed the exhaust, with the front driveshaft in place and all. im glad the header collectors are 2.5", any bigger and the piping would have not fit how I have it now.

The radiator I used is an aftermarket aluminum radiator for a nissan 240sx. I am using one on my racecar (which also has a 5.3) and it keeps it cool just fine, and my buddy had this radiator and fans lying around not being used, so I got it for cheap!

I still have both original patrol driveshafts to cannibalize when it comes time for custom driveshafts...thanks though!

Updates:

the patrol now has speakers! i made my own custom speaker brackets/holders, came out pretty good, and i got all 4 speakers for free! the front passenger side is basically the same install as driver side.






while I wait on my rotors to be machined, I started the SPOA conversion. 25% done....





yes I will have to modify the steering arm to be a high steer setup


ive also started on designing my front caliper brackets!

back from vacation, and back to work. I took some measurements of the front spindle, hub, and caliper to create a 3d model to help with bracket creation:







I also put the front axle back on the patrol last night! big difference Id say!

the rear SPOA swap is done. I had the axle out, welded, and back in in about an hour, much easier than the front. The axle shafts are currently out because the hubs need to be turned down a bit to fit the rear rotors for the disc brake swap.

i got the hard brake lines in tonight, from brake master cylinder to the frame rails. ordered some fittings and SS braided line to go to the axles. then of course have to finish the brake swap to finish off the rest of the line. Good progress though! I cant wait until I get to drive this thing.

One thing I find really weird about the Patrol, is that there is actually a lot of SAE fittings/hardware on this thing...

the 4runner rotors are not going to work, so I ordered some 2002 Rodeo rotors. A guy on the Patrol forums used these with success, so we will see how they go.

I also ordered shocks, steering damper, and new front rubber brake lines.

This is the assembly of the new axle shaft nut and lock washer. After cleaning the threads of the shaft up a bit, it went pretty well. I got the nut on snug, but not too tight, and then bent a tab up into one of the slots.



This allowed me to start mocking up the rear brakes! Here the caliper is not bolted on or anything, just sitting there, to get an idea of how it will look:





I also welded on front shock mounts and got my new shocks on:



I did the rear shock mounts and shocks as well, but didnt get a picture of them. And here is a shot of my custom high steer setup:



The only problem with it is, the "socket" on the steering arm hits the tire on the wheels I have. I put the wheel directly onto the hub for the time being with no rotor or anything, so it may get spaced out a bit more, but this will be something I need to check for sure.

Ive got a mockup of my front disc brake adapter bracket. I think it came out pretty good on the first try. Time to find a machine shop that can make me some brackets that wont break the bank.

I love this build, but that steering setup you've put together looks pretty shady. :D

You mentioned the drag link end hits the wheel/tyre, does that tower of death not hit the spring pack when you turn left?

Probably needs some decent steering arms mounted to the top knuckle bearing cap and tied back into the original arms to get the tie rod above the springs?

believe me, I know its shady, and im not too proud of it. but its definitely not going to break. it doesnt hit the springs on left turn, i made sure of it before welding it all together. i did think of doing a steering arm bolted to the top of the knuckle, but theres not enough of a stud to fit a nice thick steering arm on. the wheels I test fit also might not be the wheels I wind up going with anyways. Either way, ill just have to test it all out as a whole once everything is done and sitting on the ground ready to go.

with a project so custom, its hard to tell sometimes if something is going to work without spending a ton of money on "research" and testing. I dont have those funds, so I wing it and see if it works or not, and if it doesn't, I go from there lol.

Longer studs with cone washers would be the go...

Does the drag link rock the tie rod forward/back when you cycle the steering under load?
Will wander pretty good going down the road if it does.

can those bearing cap studs be replaced that easily? are they not welded in? and why a cone washer?

I think it might some. I have yet to do any real testing on it. I hate that the OEM patrol drag link is unable to be adjusted for length to set alignment. I might just go with a whole aftermarket tie rod and drag link kit eventually.

Been a lot of years since I've owned a G60, but I remember them being a m10x1.5 stud just threaded straight in to the knuckle. Could easily be wrong :D

Cone washers to help take the shear load of your new longer studs and transfer it into the friction between the new arm and the bearing plate/knuckle (like an OEM Toyota steering arm) and also take any slop out of the joint...

Brakes look real good. Get it finished. :D

im trying, im waiting on my brackets to be laser cut, and some threaded inserts to be turned down to size! then weld the inserts to the brackets, and bolt it all together...
