Interested!?

Few details...

Imported to the USA from New Zealand 10yrs ago, factory cab & chassis
SD33T diesel although thinking hard about a 4.8
Patrol 5spd or 4L60 with the 4.8
Stock 1980's t-case or Toyota split case with the 4L60
SoA using domestic leaves
LHD conversion using 1980's box and 1965 firewall
built and locked axles from 1980s Patrol

If there is interest I will copy & paste the build and start updating it as I go along...

I'm sub'd. Love the Patrols. Had an opportunity to score 2, but they were to far gone for me to mess with at this time. Hopefully they'll get snagged by someone who has some money and time to clean them up nice.

Alrighty, three is enough for me to copy & paste! Don't expect this to be a fast build, I am poor this time of year and am neck deep in another project for a client.

So I bought this thing on a whim 10yrs ago in New Zealand. There is an Ebay for NZ, it is called TradeMe.com. That is where I found it, some farmer had it and I paid around $350. Like I say it was a compulsive buy and I had never imported a truck before this. I basically imported it myself, with the help of a broker. Cost me around $2500 to get it to my house here in Wyoming. I picked it up myself in the port down in Long Beach.

The thing has sat around for years. I didn't have a title on it for at least 7yrs of the last 10, probably more like 8 or 9yrs. Finally got a title though so got a bit more motivated. Never really wanted to restore this thing since it never had a factory bed and has some deep rooted rot in the cab.

I sold the stock engine, trans, t-case and rear axle out of it about a year ago. I recently got it in my shop and started work on it. Like my post above some things are up in the air but the whole point of building this truck is/was to get rid of a bunch of gear I can't sell separately. So I am not sure I will build this truck for myself or get it 100% completed before I pass it on. The more I play with it though the more I think about keeping it.

I am a little on the fence about the engine and gear boxes. Mostly because the diesel needs at the least the turbo rebuilt and the I/P gone through. Otherwise it is pretty solid but is also on 24v which I don't like much. The 5spd trans is fully rebuilt, even has new Nissan synchro rings and it is pretty stout. The t-case is also fully rebuilt and is fairly stout but it doesn't have any gearing options to go lower. It is gear driven not chain. The axles I am using for sure because they are real nice. I could gear down the axles a bit, iirc 5.2's may be as low as I could go (or it may be 5.8's) and that would certainly kill the pavement speed of this thing. The motor isn't anything to get excited about power wise but is a diesel and in that sense cool. But this is all why I am thinking about a 4.8, ect ect. Any ways I am using the axles and definitely going SoA. I feel like converting it to LHD so I am going to do that. I have an 83 LHD Patrol power steering box and related gear. I also have a LHD firewall/dash which is all I need to do the conversion. if I go with the diesel and 5spd I have a front and a rear PTO box as well as Nissan made PTO winches so kind of planning to set it up with front and rear winches.

The cab has some rot and it is bad. I can get some body parts but the roof I can't get and will need the most work. I have thought about stretching the cab into an x-tra cab, it would be pretty easy since it is flat and interior stuff is box tube. But really I am not thinking much about body or bed at this point.

Plenty of blah'ing on....here are pictures.

The Ute in stock form...110" WB but that will change some.

with some 35's tossed on it, next to other trucks for comparison

One of the donar trucks is an 84 Patrol from Australia. Mostly I am just using the axle housing from this thing but here it is getting stripped.

And then I got the Ute in the shop to start on it...

room to play!

and then I got out the plasma and started cutting stock brackets off the frame

Here is the axles I have for the truck/build. 1980's Patrol C200 front and H233 rear. Both fully rebuilt, re-geared to 4.6's, ARB locked, high steer on front, GQ/Y60 Patrol strengthen CV's and hubs (Asian) in front, disc brake conversion on rear.

And that is where I am with it right now. I need to set up the engine and trans mounts and get those mounted in the frame first, obviously. Likely not going to go the v8 route simply because it will push this project back more and I am ready to build it. if I go the v8 route I will be in the engine + gear boxes over $3k which is why I hesitate. Like I say I am poor! The other junk I have on hand now. Will update as I make progress.

I got a good day of work in on the Ute today. Lot's of cutting stuff off the frame. Rear axle is out now and I got the frame all bare and naked. Makes working with it a lot easier. Once I get done cutting stuff off it (nearly there) I will clean it all up with the 4" grinder & a flap disc. After that I am going to start plating the frame where I want to buff it up with 3/16". Then I will move into making new engine and trans mounts for the SD33T & 5spd.

Cheers

Kiwi dirt, all this came out of the inside of the #2 cross member.

#2 cross member and trans mounts all gone.

Just about done cutting...

The pile of stock junk cut off is getting larger!

Hmmnnn, well suppose I should update this.

Moved into a new shop, got new tools, proceeding with the build

I sand blasted the Ute's frame, axles from an 84 Patrol and the LHD firewall from a 1965.

Got the 77's frame and axles into the new shop. Tack welded the rear axle to the stand for prep on tear down.

I knew there was some corrosion under this cross member so I went in deep to remove it.

H233 rear axle for the project got stripped down.

Got the front axle stripped down, cleaned and all brackets cut off the housing.

Using an FJ60 Land Cruiser perch on the pumpkin side. Made by RuffStuff.

Getting set up, H233 in the rear

Going to need to extend the frame rails in the rear for these nearly 63" long Deaver springs. I built the cart you see the frame sitting on to make all this just that much easier.

Ford shock towers, Fox 5/8s shaft shocks and Rubicon Express leaves.

RuffStuff frenched 63" leaf hangers on the top of the frame rails. May end up going SuA in the rear, only time will tell.

Ya I know, not even close to straight or square, just playing around with the first test and set up.

So I extended the frame rails in the rear 12.5" to handle the long Deaver springs.

I started out by sleeving the frame with some 2.5" 3/16s wall box tube. I sleeved it 10" into the frame rail.

The stock frame rail is a bit of an odd size which I was unable to find any steel stock in the exact same size. So I cut down and customized some 3x2" 1/8" wall tube.

I then made this 3/16" plate for the bottom of the frame in order to have a nice surface to weld the shackle hanger to.

All done

It is looking like I will go SuA in the rear

Got the donor truck in the shop and getting ready to pull the old oil burner....

The shop is kind of full with Patrols right now. Red 66 in foreground is getting it's motor pulled also.

Damn MQ is tall even with the portals on the floor!! Bumper sticks out to far to get a good hook on the engine too.

Good to go, that is an Exedy Safari Tuff 12" clutch in there. :)

Poor old MQ is gutted....

Drivetrain placement is moving along...

bolted the turbo and manifolds on the SD33

tight fit in the trans tunnel, going to have to open it up a bit and customize! Clutch slave is upper right and won't clear.

turbo dump is pretty close to the inner firewall body mount

At current motor location I have roughly 2 3/4" of clearance tot he firewall. Can't really get it farther back with the slave still on the engine but plan to move the motor back 1 1/4"-1 1/2".

Right now I am at about 3-4* tilt on the motor front to back

Tape measure is showing roughly the hood line, it is actually a bit higher than this so plenty of room.

Firewall to rad support on a stock 66 Patrol

and on the Ute

Roughly 1 1/2" from fan to rad support. Will gain up to 1 1/2" by moving motor back so looking at 2 3/4"-3" between fan and rad support.

No probs on the frame rail though for the turbo dump

The stock pulley's are pretty meaty and long. I can gain at least 1"-1 1/4" with custom billet pulleys.

I think it looks great in the old Patrol!

The SD33 is not as tall of a motor as the stock P engine. So I have real nice sump clearance with the swap.

Moved the body mounts out an inch on both sides.

body mounts moved 1" outboard on both sides but no "massaging " of the firewall yet

firewall cut/trimmed and welded up

cleaned up

and mounted back up on the frame

Bit more work to do but it is about done.

Bout where I am at with it right now. Having a few pulleys turned up so I can suck the fan back a bit. Waiting on a turbo injection pump to arrive from Europe. Bought a Scout SD33T engine to also use for parts in the motor rebuild. Have a full bottom end SD33T rebuild kit in hand.

So my next step is getting the engine rebuilt and then finalizing it in the chassis. Once that is done will buy a Ron Davis rad to suit this truck. Then finish off the suspension and have a rolling chassis. Probably be a few months before all that is done.

Oh ya and I got a RS traction bar kit in hand now too.

Hey Ian,

Recently I tore my ford shock towers right off the frame on my frontier. The towers and the welds didn't give way...the frame did. Might consider some gussets to the weld points to spread the load out. Just a thought. I shitcanned those in favor of some proper hoops this past summer.

That is exactly why I plated over my front frame rails to support my struts. Of course, mine hold the entire truck up, not just the shocks.

Didn't go billet due to the cost for the chunk of billet to make these but I am happy with the results anyways. :)

This is a pretty pimp bit of gear. Rear PTO box from a Fire Patrol. Very rare and hard to get. This one came out of South America and is like new. The shifter and knob I got from Japan. Bought this about 6yrs ago and just stashed it away. Got it out recently and test fit. Stoked it bolts right up no worries. Needing a new main gear in the t-case though to drive the rear PTO. Got an inquiry into to Japan to see if I can get the gear. I plan to run a rear PTO winch off this on the Ute, got a Nissan made PTO winch to go with it. You could run hydraulics off this too. With the right hydraulic pump it would run one hell of a badass hydraulic winch. Or go Unimog style and have ports for attachments. I am just going to run a rear PTO winch off it. Also got a few front PTO boxes and another PTO winch. So Ute will have front & rear PTO winches.

The shifter did not come with the PTO box. I got lucky and was able to order it from Japan with the right part #. It and the knob are NOS.

Test fit to the back of the 160 Patrol t-case.

These are nice and strong t-cases as you can see. Similar to a FJ60/62 split t-case. This t-case was rebuilt less than 1,000 miles ago. It looks excellent inside, not a single chip on any gears, shafts or synchro hubs/gears.

SD33 N/A is at the machine shop. It is getting turbo'ed and fully rebuilt. All good there and I supplied the parts. Injection pump along with turbo and injectors got sent off to an injection shop a buddy recommended. Turns out IP needed rebuild. I got barrels and plungers in route from Japan right now after that can finish the rebuild on the IP. Few months I should have the motor back ready to rock and will proceed with getting the drivetrain in the frame.

Injection pump is fully rebuilt with new barrels and plungers from japan. Turbo rebuilt along with injectors. All up it was about $1650 which is way less than I had expected so happy about that. Motor should be done in the next 30 days or so.

Few goodies showed up from Japan, brand new master vac, gear I needed for the t-case to run the rear PTO and a few small other bits.

I had bought some Deaver rear 63" leaves last spring for the project but have decided not to use them since I need some weight carrying ability with this truck. This truck and build is more of an overland or touring type truck than a full on rock crawler. Using the 160-series Patrol drivetrain just doesn't get it low enough for any serious rock duty. So I have gone to Chevy 63" springs. Truck is being set up as basically a classic Baja runner. Bed set up will be al about camping and long trips down in Mexico. Fridge onboard, water system, kitchen for cooking, stuff like this.

Just waiting on the motor and then I can build my rolling chassis.

Cheers
