I had it posted in the newbie section earlier but no response, did a search but didn't find much. I know it is not high tech question and wanted some answers straight from the source. Can ya help a fellow Yota brother out.

I am going to replace my valve cover gasket on my 1985 P.U. Toyota 22r (carb) tomorrow. The current one is leaking pretty bad and the half moon gaskets are also leakin. Looks like a straight forward procedure. Just a few questions?

I bought a Fel-pro gasket set. Does anyone believe I should not use this one?

Do I ( or can I) use any gasket maker/ sealer on the half moons or any other parts of the valve cover gaskets? If so I currently have a brand new pack of High temp black.

What else should I look for while I am in there? Like wear or tear on parts. My valves sound good so I don't think I am going to mess with them at this time.

Thanks for your help. If you must let the flamage begin. I got my suit on.:flipoff2:

question have you ever removed a 22r- re valve cover? go ahead and do it and you will see that you have nothing to be worried about. fell pro gasket will be fine i used one, just oil up the rubber gasket and put it in the groove on the valve cover. a little tricky, it sometimes seems like the gasket is too long put just work it in and it will all fit in. as to checking for anything, id look and see if there is alot of play in yur rocker arms, and timing chain, look for grooves in the timing cover (could have grinded a hole if in a water jacket its bad news must get a new cover.) and see if the guides are still there, if not id change the chain and put metal guides in.( better change the head gasket and take off the head it makes timing cover removal easier) as for gasket maker or sealer i wouldent use any, you dont really need it. as for the half moon gaskets mine did not leak so i put them back in and they still dont leak. i never checked if any of the regular parts stores sell em, post up a price if you find them, good luck.:D

Ill sneak the the timing cover off with the head on ;) theres no reason to remove it.

If the plastic guides in your 22R lasted for 150k why not put in a new set off plastic guides for another 150k? at 300k youll need a rebuild any way. Dont metal guide kits only come with one metal guide any way?

You only need the driver side metal backed guide. The timing chain doesn't make significant contact with the passenger side guide if the tensioner is working properly to break it most of the time.

I just did my timing chain about a month ago. It took about 4.5 hours. You DO NOT have to pull the head.

As for the timing cover. It is NOT rocket science. Just be sure not to over torque it when putting it back on.
