hey y'all, i have a 85 cherokee with a 2.5l 4cyl and i think it is an ax15 or ax5 tranny(not sure on that one)it is a manual 4spd.
the 2.5 is on its last leg, it backfires has no power and is burning oil. i want to swap another motor into it b/c rest of the jeep is in great shape.
i cannot find another carbed 2.5 to swap into this thing. would a new 2.5 out of a wrangler work?
i need some ideas. how hard would converting to fuelinjection be? would it be a wiring nightmare or just time consuming?
thanks for any help

dude, unless you're really attached to the 4 banger, why not consider going to a v8 or sumthin?

also, try the search feature of the bbs - you'll find some good info on engine swaps - but not 2.5's being swapped in, just out

and, while i'm at it <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0">

why not swap in a 4.0 EFI out of a newer XJ it shouldnt be much harder then swapin a 2.5 in and youd have a hella better motor.

An in line 6 swap is not an option unless you change front clips, the 2.5/2.8 front clip has a different core support.

You can put in any V6 quite easy. A 3.4 or 4.3 are good options and I personally thing a 3.8 would make a bitchin' motor in a XJ. They share the bellhousing patteren with a 225 (I think) so there are a ton of tranny choices (just like a CJ!)

A V8 is also a option but the early front clip makes it hard. I did it in my '85 but I had cooling problems galore because of the small space aloted for the radiator. It can be done however. Call Advance adapters. If you do use there stuff you will have to modify the brakets and to set the motor back a little from where they put it for the 4.0 front clip. I don;t know if this will still work, my swap used a older style of AA mount that they don't make anymore. You could make a mount like I use easy enough, I have pics if you want them.

PM me if you have more questions about swaps in XJs

The front clip refers to the grille and hood. On the four popper, the grille is longer on the inside as opposed to the 6's. Cant remember exactly why as I am not a cherokee man, but Im pretty sure its for the radiator support. someone correct me if I am wrong.

CJ5JON hit the nail on the head.

Really the fenders are the same but the core suport (the structure behind the grill and front header panel) has a big kick back in it and mounts the radiator about 6-8" aft of the front. It is tall and skinny because it fits down between the P/S box. On the 4.0 it goes straight across and the radiator is really long and abnormally thin (36x12" aprox)it also goes right across the front. The 4.0 XJs also have a slightly different front crossmember, On mine I cut most of it out and used a modified Tomken tow bar mount/ winch mount as my crossmemeber, it seems way stronger then what was there.

FYI, Your tranny is not an AX-5 or 15. Those are both 5 speeds. I would guess you either have an AX-4 or a T-4, but I would have to check my books at home to confirm this.
