2003 Montero woahs

Bought a 2003 Montero sport xls 3.5 4soeed automatic only to find the awd doesnt work. Currently the vehicle is rwd in 4h. The front driveshaft spins when car is in 4x4 or awd but the fronts do not engage. Is it just the vacume solenoid or could the diff have failed internally. My other questions are is there a way I can just swap in a 2wd manual Montero transmission and driveshaft and go and what model trans would I be looking for or is it just a waiste of time and would I be better off just fixing whatever may be wrong.

Probably vacuum solenoids, trans swap will be very involved on that truck. If you're going that far you might as well do a drive train swap.
