I splined and heat treated a couple of shafts for a friend of mine who is doing a 203 to split case adapter ( it's gotta be 2 years ago now...) the truck ( fj45 ) is still off the road.... probably not the one you're talking about....... Ben

I'm looking at doing this. Soon! Like I'm pulling my tranny/transfercase tomorrow afternoon. My big question is what happens to the crossmember. Has anyone ever seen one done? I'm not much of a fabricator, I try, I just don't have the skills. The adapters run about 1050 dollars. I'm guessing I can get a NP203 for next to nothing. I was told I need to make sure it is a Chevy application. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Later!

Eric, I emailed Gary about that and he said ANY 203 will work. The input gear is replaced as part of the kit and this is what varies from 203 to 203. I saw a 203 at that yard near your place (hwy 30 I think) when I was getting the scout box this summer. I heard that the yard had closed though.

I'm reasonablely sure I'm going to do this. I'm going to lose my h55f in the process as I'm going to be selling it to finance the NP203 parts. They are spendy. I guess any NP203 box will work as long as it is from a Chevy application. I'm going to have to do a search for one. I doubt I'll have to leave town. I'm hoping to get a decent one for a fair price.

Eric:

You should'nt have to pay more than $50 to $100 - and as Ken says - any 203 will do - Dodge ones seem to be a dime a dozen out there. The bolt patterns are all the same - the input gear is different, but that gets changed anyway. Are you really going to take out the H55F?? If you are not bothered about having a 5 speed, you may want to consider using an SM 465 - it may be a better/cheaper option than using the H42 - the trick is to find the rare 465/203 unit Just some thoughts. I never installed my h55f. It has spent a year on the workbench. I'm currently running a 350TBI, Ranger Underdrive, H42, and the stock split case. I was thinking of going with the above with a NP203 gear reduction box. I might decide to do something else though. Maybe an auto or an NV4500 then 203 and then split case. I'm going to do a lot of measuring before I do any purchasing. As for the SM420/465, I don't like the long throw and the gears are spread too far apart for my driving. I love the low gear though.

I drove my FJ55 almost every day for two years with the SM465. The gears are far apart, but it wasn't so bad, and it was great off-road.

Yes, I know the 465 is stout and durable. With my motor I think it would be too many gaps. I'm getting out of control now. I've got a 700r4 auto priced, an adapter shaft to the NP203 box price, NP203 box price, NP203 adapter prices, and several other options in the works. It may take me a week before I get the final dream plan down on paper and start doing it.

Later!
