Alternator Upgrade For Early 22R's

I did this mod on my 82 Pick-up and it works great!

The early 22R's pre 84.5's run the 40 Amp externally regulated alternators.

While the 85+ 22R's have the 60 Amp internally regulated alternators.

Comparison photo, the early model alt is considerably larger.


The lower engine/alternator mounts are different, sorry I don't have pics of them. But the older 40amp alternator is mounted in a "female" fashion, while the older mounted in a "male" fashion. The upper mount/adjustment point are the same on both alternators/engines.

The wiring harness from the alternators to the fenderwell plugs are also different. They both are wired differently and have different plug patterns. The only mod necessary is on the fenderwell wiring:
-Carefully remove the 'cover' on the top of the plug(no pic again!)
-Pry the wires out the back of the plug

-Eliminate the external regulator with wiring, LEAVE enough wire to splice into the alternator connection.

-Simple color coordination here, just line up the colors with the coresponding color on the "new" alternator harness. yellow-yellow red-red black-black white-white
-You will have a extra yellow wire after you splice the new connector, I just spliced it into the other yellow wire. PIC


I just ran a 8Ga wire from the white to my ammeter with a 60 amp inline fuse to the battery.

Parts needed for swap:
-Motor/Alternator mount from later 85+ 22R with internally regulated alternator
-Alternator wire harness from alternator to fenderwell plug
-Internally regulated alternator

90 supra runs a 80 amp alternator and it is a plug and play.

Yep. The late 80's Corolla, Supra, Cressida and Mini trucks all ran the same physical size Alternator. The Supra and Cressida got 80 ampers and the rest got 60 amp.

Might have to swap the pully but that would be it. Somethign weird is the early 90's 4Runner got a 70 amp on the 22RE's and it has a different plug.

Just looking at this... and at the parts store...pulled a 90 supra (apparently the auto supras got the 80amps, the manuals got 70amp) and compared an 85 4runner (60amp) and was suprised to see that the mounts don't line up or are clocked diffrent. Anyone know whats up? Is this info good - as far as the plug and play mount wise - did not look like it. Do I have something wrong?

The one from a 90 cressida looks like it will work. It is 80 amp and doesn't matter if you have a auto or stick. Compare that one, I'll bet it is the one.

Wranger Power Products had a "bling" adapter for an externally regulated "GM" type to bolt to a 22RE.

It came awful CLOSE to the coolant pipes..

Id take pics but I sold my setup to Jay Kopynski (sp) years ago...

the 85-92 toy p/u 22r 22re alt is the same alt with same plug {round} and bolt patteren

93-95 toy 22re's has an oval shaped plug, which is the same plug on the tacoma, late tacoma's have a square plug

the toy v6 88-92 has a 3 groove belt pulley but has the {round plug} too

the 93 up 3.0 v6 have the oval plug as well, the 3.4 is using the oval plug as well

80amp for Toyota Cressida/Supra Denso part # 210-0158
60amp for Toyota Truck/4Runner Denso part # 210-0106

I'm still researching this, but from what I can tell it doesn't look like it would work. The bolt hole opposite the pivot point is kinda in the wrong spot. If you look from the back (plug side) of the unit with the pivot hole @ 6 o'clock the bolt hole is @ 1 o'clock for P/U and Runner. The bolt hole for Cressida/Supra is @ 11 o'clock. Not to mention the plug for the harness is not in the right spot. I've looked this up using the Denso Starter/Alternator Catalog-Buyers Guide. I'm going to look into this some more, if in fact this does work (I'm hoping :smokin:) There would be a 100amp alternative available from most parts stores. Bosch part # AL3234X.

My bad. Not a direct fit but it can be made to work.

Attached is pictures of a Cressida 80amp It had been on my 89 Supra at one time and it had been on my sisters 88 Corolla for a while as well. Plug and play on the Corolla

It has one of its mount 90degrees off from a direct fit on the 22RE.

Two ways to make this work The easy and dirty one would be to extend the adjuster bracket and swap the pully. The mount in relation to the plug looks clocked right. Its the upper tensioning bracket that is 90 off.


Doing some quick measuring the depth of the housing looks the same as the one on my 22RE. Looks like you could make a Bastard out of it. You should be able to swap the 80 amp guts into the 60 amp housing and make it a bolt on. You might even get away with just swapping the front housing with the upper bracket to get it clocked the right way.


The 80 amp I have has bad brushes. I know the ones on the alt in the truck are getting short and I had planned to change them soon. If nobody else has had a chance to get them side by side on the bench before then I will play with them and see if I can swap the housings.

Yeah, Hybrid the two and all should be well. Just hope the local parts dummy doesn't check the core to closely :D
