i know this might be a stupid ? but its tuesday and i have to get this thing running. i just rebuild my 22re out of my 86 4runner and i'm trying to start it for the first time i installed the dizzy and it wouldn't start so i thought it might be 180 off so i made a full rotation with the crank and installed it again but still no start, i took the hose off the cold start injecter to make sure it was getting fuel and i know its getting fuel because it sprayed gas out. when i rebuild the engine i tired to be careful to make sure that i lined the marked links up with the dots on the timing sprockets but i'm beginning to think that maybe they some how got off mark so i was wondering if anyone knew of a way to tell if they are off besides taking the whole timing cover off, any help would be great i just moved out on my own and this is my only car, thank you

you can try this, sorry if its just the basics



and you have spark...
and your sure the dissy is in the right location?
Pull your #1 plug, put your finger over the hole, have someone bump the starter turning the motor over untill the compression blows your finger off. your at TDC, or close,
check timming mark, looks good?

I dont think your chain could be to far off.


turn motor to TDC, put dissy back in with rotor pointing to #1. and the housing back is in the right location from when you pulled it?

double check your plug wires for firing order.

tried reinstalling the dizzy two more times and rechecked all the vac lines, still no start and its still back firing out of the dizzy, does anyone know of a way to make sure the chain is lined up properly without taking everything apart? i would really like to make sure the links are still lined up right without tearing everything apart

idk it back firing out of the distributer is exactly what its called but it sounds like a back fire and smoke comes out of the distributor

If smoke is coming out of the dizzy, then you have some sort of a short there.

i dont know what smoke out of the dissy means, but it is not good.

I don t think there are any short cuts to checking the timming chain marks,

I think you problem lies somewhere other than your timming chain....

Sounds like a short if there is smoke. I'd check out the following.

Look over all your electric connections that lead to and away from your (Dizzy). Look at your coil and the coil wire to the Dizzy. Look for wires that may of been caught while R & R-ing the motor as well.

Recheck the firing order, cap (is the cap cracked?) and rotor. Check your valves for adjustment, You could have adjusted them 180 out (FSM valve adjustment). This is a good way you can check the timing at TDC with-out taking it all the way apart.

Other questions come to mind.
Are your fuel injectors hooked up right?
Is your knock sensor hooded up?
Is your MAF plugged in by the air filter?

funny how the basics are the things we overlook sometimes, i got a friend and did the bump the stater and let it blow my finger out, installed the dist. and it started right up also not changing the exhuast studs came to back to kick me in the ass as i had a nasty exhaust leak and the back two studs had stripped out, probaly should have changed and checked all those but napas heli coil and a new gasket and its running smooth now thanks for all the help guys and sorry im a retard

well the truck ran pretty good after i fixed the exhaust leak and last night after a few beers for some reason i decided to drive the 4runner around the block in 4 wheel drive, everything worked fine but this morning i went to crank it up and the starter wouldnt engage, i first thought that the solinod went bad because i could hear a small tick coming from the starter when my brother tried to start it and i listened, but then i noticed that when i turned the key to start it the clock on the dash would go off, is this normal or could this mean that one of my starter wires has a short in it somewhere, sorry if this is a stupid ? but i just thought i would ask. also is it possible for the solinods on these starters to just go out like this? sorry again if a lot of the ?s are stupid but im only 19 and this is my first toyota and first time ever rebuilding an engine of any kind

OK lets check some more basics.

You say it clicks when you try to start it. The solenoid should be good if its clicking, however it might be the Bendix drive on the starer.

Check your Battery terms, clean and hook back up.
Make sure your battery is fully charged.
Next check the small wire at the starter. This wire is prone to corrode.
Check the switch on the clutch pedal (neutral switch).
If that doesn't work pull the starter and have it checked at Autozone or Checker.....

It could be your engine is so tight from the rebuild that the old starter can't crank it over.

Just some thoughts.

took the starter off and cleaned the contacts inside, hooked it back up and sitll i just get one click when i try to start it not a very loud click either, changed the female end on the stater wire and cleaned the main power wire still just the click so i took it off again and went to auto zone and checked it and it passed even had the guy check it 5 times, all pass. now im thinking that i may have a short somewhere between where the solinoid power wire connects and the switch, gona get some wire diagrams and see if i can find out if that is the problem, thanks for the help and electrical stuff is a pita

i have searched and tried to follow wires and no luck so does anyone want to make my life easier and just tell me where i can find the neutral safety switch and the starter relay

just checked my voltage going to the starter, i have 6.5 going to the main power wire and i have 0 going to the solinoid wire

my understanding of the starter relay is that toyota started using them in 86 and up models and there located on the passenger side of the engine bay, but my 4runner does not have one??? im very confused because i have spent the last 2 hours searching for this damn thing and can not find it anyone helP???

tore my whole dash apart trying to find where the starter relay is, the po made a mess of wires and a lot of scary splices so im glad i found them now and can fix them but i still have not found the starter relay. there are two relays on the fuse box behind the drivers side kick panel and i found the heater relay behind the stereo part of the dash. are one of the relays on the fuse box the starter relay? does anyone else have a 86 4runner that doesnt have the starter relay on the passenger side of the engine bay, ever where i can find thats where its located on everyone elses vehicels, any body that can help me out with this??

there is no way that this thing has a starter relay becuase on my harness the solinoid wire for the starter ties into the main wiring harness and follows it through the firewall to the ecu, then the starter wire that come from the ingition key itself ties into a group of wires that run under the dash by the front window back to the ecu, so if this has no starter relay then i can only guess that the starter wire from the ignition passes through the neutral safety switch and through the ecu and then to the starter solinoid? am i right?

are you talking about the circuit opening relay? should be located up inside the dash behind the pass. side speaker - mounted to sheetmetal.

part # is 41-5128 (just happen to have it saved in my phone)
