Wow, this is fun. Honestly.

I'm kinda runnin' out of ideas. Here's an update on what it is doing:

Starts and idles quite normally (around 800 rpm). Hold the accelerator and try to hold engine at 2500 RPMish and it will run with regular stumbles (regular meaning they are evenly spaced out). When it stumbles the rpms will drop to about 1000 or 1500 then back up to 2500, all while holding the accelerator steady.

Here's what work I have done:

Replaced timing chain and guides
Plugs, wires, distributor cap (rotor is still good)
ignition coil
adjusted valve clearances
compression is ok and even across all 4 cylinders
fuel filter replaced

What else might be the problem?

Thanks,
Greg

EGR

Unplug it and see how it does.

Is the ignition timing set correctly? What about a lean condition? Check codes, unplug or remove and plug off the egr. When its surging try adding propane to the air intake. Put a timing light on the coil wire and verify the spark isn't cutting out, possible igniter problem.

if it runs better with the EGR disconnected check the EGR valve vacuum modulator
