motor runs great at about 25* advance. wont retard any lower than 10* and runs like crap at that setting. jumping the "T" terminal doenst do a thing. i pulled the head a month ago and marked everything, and it all went together fine. get this. at 0* TDc ( exhasut stroke) and cam is straight up and the rotor is DIRECTLY on the #1 terminal...runs smooth, occassional sputtering, way better than it was....i would think that it would run REALLY bad if i was off a tooth, and the fact that the "T" terminal doenst affect it anymore makes me think its electrical. or is it the chain? only 20 k miles, did i get it messed up when i took the head off? pushes 37's to 90mph on the freeway, so its not short on power, just around town it sometimes does and sometimes doesnt have any power.......HELP i'm gona take it aprart tonite when i get home.....thanks

Dallas,

This STILL points back to the TPS. Whether it is new or not, is it correctly adjusted? The timing cannot be set right if the TPS isn't adjusted to where it should be.

Double check the TPS and try to time it again. Everything else related is mechanical, and all of that sounds like it is setup right

A off and on bad airflow sensor was making my 86 do that I took air intake cleaner and spray it down real good washed all the crap out of it moved the flap around a bit.i also cleand the intake.this was momentary thing that could last 1 min to 1 hour but would go away when i hit the top of the air box with my hand.

25 degrees of advance without the terminal shorted is probably about half that, so I'd bet your around 12 degrees right now. Mabey somone could confirm this.

Are you using a timing gun with an advance knob on it?

Its on my page. You need to have a good IDLe signal to tell the computer you are at idle for setting the timing:

TPS Info

Could also be the distrubutor is off a tooth, too. I marked mine before I removed it so I was able to put it back pretty close to the correct time when I rebuilt my engine.

I had this happen last year when i redid my timing chain.......It was the distributor off a tooth. i would say second choice would be the timing chain off a tooth.
You can check the top cam marks by just lifting the front of the valve cover.
If the chain is off by a tooth, pull the bolt holding the cam gear on, and while keeping tension on the chain (to keep it on the crank gear), slide the cam gear forward off the cam just enough so you can rotate it inside the loop of chain and line up the shiny link with the dot on the gear, then reinstall the gear. JUST MAKE SURE THE CHAIN DOESNT SLIP OFF THE CRANK GEAR.

maybe when i pulled the head last month the chain slipped off the crank? i set it on the guides while i pulled the head........this is what i thought was up, BUT i checked it all out and it looks good, so i'm gonna check one more time. when its at TDC the rotor is DEAD ON the #1 terminal on the dist. cap.......jumping the "T" terminal does nothing.......WTF?

Fightin' mad fireboy---90 mph with 37" ties. Wow. Why are you messing with it more? My 92 has the cam timing in factory spec with ignition timing and I can't do hardly 75.
