I recently bought a 96 Dakota 4X4 that had had its trans removed by past owner, trans and T case was laying in the bed when I trailered home.
I rebuilt the trans and installed it, and there is a wobble/vibration in it that I think may be coming from the T case.
Having just bought it and got it back on the road, and having 165K miles put on by someone else besides me, I'd like to crack it open for a look see "anyways".
The underhood option code sticker says it should have a 231HD case. The ID tag on the case simply says 231D, no HD. Mopar number on tag is 52105295 (last digit "might" be a 6) I'd like to know before I pop it open, which it is.
I realize that in 20+ years of past ownership that it is hard to tell what might have been done. I do know that this is not the 1st time that the tranny had been opened up.

I don't think there was a NV231HD in '96. Your part number also does not match anything in the catalog. Here is the listing for the NV231 in the '94-'96 Mopar Parts Manual:

TRANSFER CASE ASSEMBLY, Complete (W/Tag) ***
3.9L Engine
5209 8023 1 N 1994
5209 8542 1 N 1995
5209 8497 1 N 1996, Before 12/11/95
5210 5094 1 N 1996, After 12/11/95
5.2L Engine
5209 8024 1 N 1994
5209 8543 1 N 1995
5209 8498 1 N 1996, Before 12/11/95
5210 5095 1 N 1996, After 12/11/95
5.2,5.9L Engine
5209 8314 1 R 1994
5209 8502 1 R 1995
5209 8357 1 R 1996

For comparison, here is the listing from the same manual for the NV241 which is clearly marked with standard and heavy duty versions:

Huh....the option sticker under the hood definitely says "HD transfer case",
I will recheck the numbers on the tag to verify. this is a 318/46RE with 3.91s club cab. I know that being "old enough to drink legally" if we were instead talking about a person born the year that this truck was built, means that who knows what may have been done to it.....just means more reason to figure out just what I have, before I go and order anything for it.

The TC has a noise in it, and with the overall condition of the rest of the truck, I don't feel bad about opening it up, rebuild kits I see available plus a new chain, certainly cost less than a replacement 'case would appear to, (unless something breaks and self destructs) I have looked around for the possibility of a good used replacement.

I plan to keep this truck for the long haul considering its condition. This is my 5th square body Dakota.
I currently also have a '92, also club cab 318 but 2wd.
the one that is subject of this thread, is my 1st '96, 1st 4wd version and 1st with something other than 3.55 gears

IIRC, there is no "HD" 231 in the Dodges, only "D" versions which are supposedly heavier duty with a wider chain, but they aren't "heavy duty", that was the 241.

huh... then why does the sticker under the hood say that I have a 231 D-HD?
couple more questions;
what is the difference between all of those listed above and how much interchange between them will one from a 1/2 ton fit a Dakota? what is the difference between one for a 3.9 vs one from a 318 vs one fro 360?
There is one on CL at the moment out of a '95, full size 1/2ton that had a 360 in it/ still bolted to its transmission (auto.) Can I directly bolt this into my 96 Dakota?

That is odd as there was never a 231D-HD listed in the Rams, which you would think would have that option.

But in general the internals are the same, its the input and output shaft sizing, tail housing differences (for mechanical speedo or not). HD usually means a 5 or 6 gear planetary vs the 3 gear standard. case patterns are the same AFAIK

IDK why the hood sticker says what it does, looked at it again it is onme that's on the list, 5210 5295, I found out it isn't HD, as while I found the problem that I originally thought might be transfer case related, (it was elsewhere) I had to replace the rear tailshaft seal and the 1st one they sold me by year/make/model application was for the HD version as it turned out, was wrong. so I looked around on google and figured out the right one... now I know what I have in there anyway.
