a small block-powered 60 is the way to go. My advice would be to go with a TBI, a TPI is probably too complicated (whaddya say Georg?). If you have a pre '85, with the short 4 speed, one option would be to switch to the h55f, toyota 5 speed (Mudrak sells them new), which is about 5 or 6 inches longer... this would allow you to place the 350 in a good position, without having to move the transfer case (and redo driveshafts and whatnot). If you have a post'85... you will have to move the transfer case forward. Or you could go with an auto, such as 700r4. In any case, you will need adapter stuff from AA. And a wiring harness from Howell (not painless wiring) for the fuel injection.

Hope that helps.

I'm guessing I have close to 4,000 into mine. I stopped counting. I use a Ranger Underdrive to adapt it to the 4spd. I did a TBI and I wouldn't do it any other way. I have a friend with a newer high hp motor and it is not as driveable as mine. I used a Painless Harness, I would go for a Howell Harness next time. I think I would consider an Auto too. Shoot me an email if you have specific questions. I've done two, so I know a little.

Later!

ok! who is judge smails?!

anyways, the 350 tbi is the easiest and most cost effective way to go. easy to keep smog legal and if you use the right parts (AA and Howell) it's a cinch. not much scratch building or other mods needed. figure out if you want to go with the auto or manual tranny. a friend of mine, randy, did the conversion in one weekend with the help of "simple" simon, but he had all his parts ready and stayed with the LC 4 spd.
definetly makes the vehicle more enjoyable to drive!!!
my wife's is next in line for the same transplant (but TPI)!!!!!!
cause i gotta be difficult!

If you want to drive alot on the highway I would highly recommend some type of overdrive.

I converted my FJ62 when the 3FE puked and auto was slippin.

I went the route of 350 tbi, improved 700r4, AA adapter and can cruise at 75 mph with power to go. No I just need to rebuild the rear chunk.......

If you go 700R4 just make sure you make the "improvements" and have the throttle cable adjusted properly.

the 700 you want is actually called a 4L60 years 88 to 92. in 93 they went to a 4L60e which is fully computer controlled, although some trucks still came with the 4L60.
