We have a 91 Bronco XLT with Dana 60front, gm 14bolt rear, 4.56 gears, Atlas transfer case, 39.5 inch T/As on alum beadlocks. Motor is tired so we are going to put in remanufactured 351w as it is easiest way to stay CA smog compliant. With rock rails, axles, roll cage, tool box in bed, have probably added 12-1500 lbs to original curb weight of 4500.....street legal for convenience, it is used only for offroading.

What engine upgrades would be suggested, staying smog legal? Don't care about top end other than freeway speed, and am a technical ignorant....thanks

I would take a set of cylinder heads off a 96' Ford Explorer (GT-40) and keep your eye out for some GT-40 intakes.

The Ford Bronco was introduced in 1966 and it has five distinct generations. Have two-door sporty look later evolve into a full size model built on a Ford truck chassis.
To upgrade your engine you can make some auto parts replacement to enhance its power with turbo boost and engine upgrades techniques.
Check Google for some upgrade tips that compatible with your Bronco.

I would think along the lines of underdrive pullies, use electric fan and water pump to eliminate parasitic drag, MSD ignition. Those are all "bolt on" type upgrades that should give you a few HP here and there and don't require a ton of know how to install.
