Hey
Ive been having this problem where ill be driving down the road and my engine all of a sudden shuts off while im in gear and pressing the gas. It then sometimes turns back on after like 5 seconds or i have to stop and turn it back on and it turns on with no problems. So far all i can guess is that its eather no gas or no spark. I dont know really how to tell except i looked at the tailpipe one time when it happend and it looked like my carb was loaded up(black shit went everywhere). Can anyone possibly help me narrow down the problem anymore or tell me whats wrong please? Thanks

sounds like your ignition is cutting out. Your ignition module may be going out or you may have a loose/ broken wire in the harness ti the ignition.

Hmmmm... Could it be that you are running a Q-Jet on that thing? Yeah I think that might be it. Man you need to listen to people when they tell you stuff, and when you go for second opinions, include all the information.

Some things that might help diagnose this, since I've already looked at it a couple of times:

1) It's running a Q-jet carb (needles are facing toward front), and the problem only happens on inclines.

2) The carb mix is suspect. I adjusted it a couple of times on our last club trip cause it was so rich we were all gagging on fumes. I leaned it ALL the way out (being careful not to bottom the needles out). We were in the process of bringing it back up, when the ride ended.

3) Suggested that he look for information on mounting the carb backwards, as many here have, to alleviate any problems with uphill inclines. Also told him to suspect possible fuel pump issues, but the oil smelled fine when we changed it about a month or so ago (no excessive fuel smells).

4) Suggested that he look for info on float adjustments, and or "offroad kit" I had heard about in the past for the Q-jet.

5) The ignition system seems fine for the most part. The first thing I mentioned was to get a replacement coil when we were doing the tune up on this thing. The previous owner TOLD him it was on its last legs. He has yet to do this. This would be the FIRST thing I would replace, come AWN man it's $20, you spent more than that on lights!!!! Where are your priorities man!

Oh, BTW Welcome to the big leagues. I told you to get your shizat straight before you come here wasting people's time. Now go do your research, PD, and stuff like a good Lil8itch. Come back when you've considered all the above, and acted appropriately.

Actually dude, thats not what im talking about herb. That was off road, on the inclines. I'm talking about on road, going 45 and the fuckign thing shuts off and doesnt turn back on normally. The stuff you told me was for off road and help it on the inclines and yes i do remember all that stuff you told me, looking into flippuig the carb backwads and getting the off road kit. And i have come to the conclusion that it isnt my carb that is causing it to shut off randomly on the road. And you also shouldnt get so pissed off at me gettign second opinions. Peace

You never said that it randomly shuts down... you said it did it in gear when pressing on the gas - sounded to me like it was bogging down.

If it's cutting out with no apparent regularity, I'd look into the ignition system.

What kind of ignition system you got? Motorcraft? If so, get a new box.

The one between the Motorcraft and points (forget the name ) Swap up to the Motorcraft one - you'll need the distributor, box and wiring between the two.

And if your coil is at all suspect, get a new one. Look at the cheap stuff. Like are all your connections tight?

Can you make it stall out in the driveway from under the hood?

Any other info you can share?
