roomate's truck... Hydrolocked it months ago, got new junkyard motor, his truck is an 88, motor is a 91.

all wired in, everytihng changed back to 88 wiring harness since hte junkyard whacked the 91 harness...

ok trucks all wired and running, but will not rev over approx 3500rpm, it just shudders and hesistates spits and sputters, it also starts very hard, i'm thinking starved for fuel, the truck did sit 9 months without moving, teh fuel system was cycled through before it was fired and the fuel filter was changed, tank drained and re-filled, any suggestions???

my guess is plugged or failing fuel pump...

I would try setting (re-setting?) the timing. Both symptoms can be caused by incorrect timing.

You can check the fuel pump by disconnecting it and watching the flow. There is also a pressure guage you can connect to it. (never done it myself though)

Yeah, do what PJohnson said, check your timing. It could be off by a teeth or two which would resuilt in the symtoms you stated. Also...I highly doubt it would be it but check your cold start sensor...my 91 4Runner ran like shit and took like 3-4 times to start it when the cold start valve died.

i guess i should have said that the distributor was in teh 91 motor so we re-used it, teh plug matched teh wiring harness and there were no difference between them as we could see... so it's still set from the vehicle it was in before

Take it back, get a 4.3. <IMG SRC="smilies/thefinger.gif" border="0"> ...Hehe... Maybe there was a change in wiring from 88 to 91? Have you gone over both years' diagrams?

Don't know if you got the problem fixed, but I used to have an 88 Toy 4x4 V6 that had a similar problem. My problem turned out to be the ignition coil. Just replaced it with a better one.

I am new to the forum, I and have had a similar problem with my 93 4Runner It would rev fine while park but wouldn't tach over 3500 to 4000 under load. After spending 300 dollars at the deal it was a pluged fuel dampner. It is on the passenger fuel rail. You will need to take off the air intake if this is the case. I hope this helps.

You could remove the Cold start injector line, and jump the diagnostic terminals B+ to Fp, and SEE the flow if your still thinking lack of fuel from pump.

Was the junkyard engine complete, as in timing belt, intake & such still on?

Sounds like your cam timing is off.
We need to know more.....

i just noticed this came back to teh top.. well here's what it was...

the motor came from a wrecking yard, well he never checked the timing for sure, but somehow the distributer got smashed dow 1/2in and rotated it so far advanced and was rubbing all teh guts inside teh dist, i swapped in his 88 dist and she runs like a top...
