I need to gear my truck ('92 pickup w/ V6) for the 33's that it will getting in a few months, and am having a little trouble deciding on which gearset to get. The 4.56's will gear me closer to stock, but the 4.88's will be just a little lower and give me more power around town. The only thing that concerns me is I drive to the beach all the time, and to the mountains, which are all 2 hours on the freeway. I don't want to be sucking any more gas than I need to, but the extra power of the 4.88's would be nice. What do you think? Are the 4.88's overkill?

You wont notice a difference between 4:88's and 4:56's. (Basically the same. ) If you want a difference go to 5:29's. Either 4:56's or 4:88's will put you at about stock with 33's.

Hey Crawlytoy,
As a matter of fact, I have a buddy who is selling a IFS 4:56 front diff and just the ring and pinion 4:56 for the rear. He wants $150 for both. If interested e-mail me.

My 93 V6 came factory with 31"s and 4.56's. So I can't see putting them in for a 33". It's not just the larger tire it's also alot more weight to spin. If you do want to do 4.56's I've still got my rear gears. I'd sell for $50, but I'd go with atleast 4.88's and 5.29's if you do mostly around town driving. Don't be affraid to over gear. You'll be alot happier with the power.

5.29s because you'll want bigger tires later.

Go to www.4LO.com and use the GEAR CALC that pops us at the top of the page. You can see how fast the engine will turn at different speeds...
factory tire = 28"
1st gear (crawling) = ~3.95
5th gear (highway) = .87
Low range = 2.28

To see how you do on the highway, enter your low range as 1:1, and use 5th gear. It will let you put in a speed and see how fast the engine will turn with those gears, or vice versa.

Also, if you ask a non-toyota guy they'll tell you wrong. Toys are geared lower than american V6/V8 rigs because of the lack of low end grund and the fact that they don't mind revving so much.

Typically, 4.88 = perfect gear for 33s, and 5.29s match up with 35s. So if you think you're going to have 35+ tires someday, get the 5.29s and enjoy the peppy performance for a while till you thow bigger tires on it. That way you only have to do this crap once.

I have a '92 that came from the factory with 31's as well. Could that mean that I already have 4.56's? Guess I better go find out what my current ratio is. Also, don't the 5.29's have more problems with breakage? There seemed to have been talk of that somewhere.

i've been running 5.29s for years with 33s. I drive about 500 miles a week with alot of that freeway miles. Nice and peppy, actually have power to pass and merge. Wheeling is great with the lower gears. As for strength if you plan on bouncing 38" swampers on rocks then you might eat a r&p. I never have.

The lower you go with ring and pinions, the more inherently weak the pinion becomes.
The teeth are much smaller, and more suseptible to breakage.
Not too much of a problem, unless you get into big power, really low t-case gears, or big tires.
I would go for 5.71 gears my self. Friend of mine runs them with a 22RE, and 35"s, and never drops a gear running up highway 50.
