My brother back home busted up his rear 4.88's and is having a local shop put some in. It is a V6 3rd. Anyways the shop ordered a gear set (dont know what brand) and said the ring gear wouldnt fit...he then later told my brother he found out why it didnt fit...because he said this third came with factory 4.88's and you have to buy factory 4.88's from the factory for them to fit...is this true????

could possibly be true, but it is most likely a bunch of bull shit from people who don't know what they are doing. Are these the same people who set up the rear in the first place, there could be a reason they broke!

Yup it's true. Factory 4.88 V6 gears are alittle thinner than regular 4.88 gears because of the way it is designed compared to the other V6 diffs.

its not a carrier break it is a houesing break since the factory uses a thin ring gear the pinion bearing bore was moved closer to the ring. so yes he has to get factory gears or he has to get a v-6 dropout case from a 4.56 truck with abs

Yep it's a dud. I don't know why Toyota did this but the Auto tranny equipped rigs with factory 31" tires come with special diffs that require a special R&P that can only be purchased from the dealer. We have been round this one before and ended up tossing the housing in the trash.

Any way to tell if an empty V6 3rd originally had 4.88's, or do you have to try to install the gears before you find out? That would be a drag to find out your 3rd is useless.

I will check with our diff expert at the shop. I am sure it's possible to tell but you might have to take a measurement on the bearings.

If I remember right there is a number or letter enbossed into the case, been there and done it also, wondered why I got such a good deal on the drop-out--$10.00 and I was not a Newbie. The sign on my forehead must have changed from "Run In To Me" to "Sucker" that day.
