Has anyone tried to use front fenders as patch panels for the rear? My quarters are shot, but front fenders are cheap. I tried a search, but could only find the post from a few days ago, when the rust was patched with steel from a rear bob.
Does no-one make a patch panel?

Toyota only makes an entire replacement panel. I looked into doing this about 9 months ago and it just wasn't worth it (to me). each side costs around $600 or so. you're better off learning to weld and patching it yourself. depending on what's rusted out (assuming wheel well) you can just cut out the rot and cut, bend & weld a new piece in there. you can cut about 3" out all the way around the "outter" wheel well and mate it up to the inner wheel well pretty easy. here's a pic of mine (got to lazy to actually weld it up, but still a pretty good fit even w/o welding

not the best pic, but you can tell it's been cut....

Ditto to what Black_Panther said. Who can argue with more fenderwell clearance??

There was a link for a Canadian company who had fiberglass replacement panels...

They aren't on their site, but if you call, they can give you the lowdown. I was going to try to fix mine all nice, but then I welded the rear, and went wheeling with a bunch of very SWB vehicles, and now it is too denty for me to care.

I was told by many people who do bodywork that it is common practice to use front fenders to repair quarter panels with the correct flare.

I pulled this old thread up.......So officially does no one make steel replacement 1/4 panels any more. I work at a dealership and our bodyshop does not show any available for 1st gen runners.

My truck is beat to shit and bondo is falling out everywhere. How else could I reskin the back of it short of finding one in a yard and drilling out spot welds????

Drilling out spot welds really isnt all that bad. You could have it swapped with a junkyard panel in a weekend, maybe enen bondo'd as well. Before you do, theres a long support under the bed rail, with nuts for the topper bolts. Take this panel off the verticals. That will save you about 30 spotwelds. Otherwise, its really not bad. Besides if its been "fixed" with good ol' form-a-fender before, there's not much left anyway.

Hey 4rnrrick...
Go fuck yourself:flipoff2: :flipoff2: This is an old thread that I pulled up through a search. My problem is a little different than some rust and tire rash on my fenders.

Both sides of my truck are beat off. The persons that had my truck before put about a 1/4 of mud in it. This is a little more indepth than patching.

A friend of mine got a set of 1/4s for his 85 4runner. At the time he said they are now out of production, and their was only 7-8 sets left in the country. Take the info for what it's worth, I have never looked into it. So you may consider this heresay.

I found an older thread in which people want info on rear quarter replacements for 1st gen 4runners. cross canada auto parts sells left and right; hand made fiberglass quarter skins (extend from door jam to the tail lights. Each side costs 240.00 cdn. I know they are sold out of one side. I was told they would probobly be making more in Feb or March. Part #s are as follows L side 810350FQ-5, R side 810350FQ-6. www.crosscanadaparts.com

Go to rustrepair.com. Their site doesn't show panels for the 4runner, but they can get them. I called yesterday, they have fiberglass qtr panels for $149 each. I think the dim. were 29" x 42". The rust on mine is similiar to 4rnrricks and I will probably do what he did. I am not sure if I could do it as good as he did though.

I wonder how you patch a fiberglass panel to metal.. Do you bolt it ...Glue it? Would the panel be from the back of the door around to the tale gate? That does not seem that bad of a price for new quarters....

Yea my buddy did the reverse-a-pannel trick a few months back, it works like this,
You take 2 front quarters, and flip them to the OPPOSITE sides, so the rear of the quarters (where the mudflaps would bolt on) are to the front of the fender wells. Then take and cut to fit, the big thing here is keeping the center of the new and old fender. His were all rusted out, so he just removed the whole thing at the 90deg angle on top of the flair, where the flair comes out of the body. (you can also hide any inperfections in your welding/body filler in that joint too if you need to)

The big difrence is the ammount of flair the fenders have after your done, if you look close, the front fenders of the runners will have more than the rears, but you can only notice it if your really looking. Ill try to get over there to take some pics, he just painted it, so may show up a little difrent than if it was just in primer.
