FIRST:

I've searched and read for five days straight........
2.5 is staying for now.......
_________________________________________________

From what I can see, the 2.8 GM has the same bell pattern as the Jeep 2.5L.

So, a 700r4 from a 2.8 should be possible. If you agree, any idea what flex plate will work?

I'm just wanting some confirmation of what I've been reading in all of the searches I've been through.

FYI: 1994 YJ, AX5, NP 231. AX5 is gone; I'll be using a Dana 300 and know about the adapters I'll need on that end.

Thanks!

With 5.89's it might not be a problem.

You'd almost have to use a Jeep flexplate, for starter purposes. The torque converter would then bolt to that....

Anybody else?

Just wondering why the 700R? and not the 904 that came behind the 2.5/2.8 in a cherokee. They are small have the rite adaptor for a D300 and if built rite can withstand bigblock power.

Yes. You just buy a Hurst floor shifter with the 727/904/999 tranny kit. You can even get it in bling bling pistol grip, ratchet style, and even with a little button built on it to turn on your nitrous. :flipoff2:

I'm just looking at options / trying to find something that will work. I'm not against using a Mopar tranny; if I had one located, I'd likely buy it. Haven't found one though and a friend has a 700 located...............

I'd prefer an overdrive tranny but the 904 is decent. My XJ has stayed on 33's with stock 3.54 gears and the 2.8 V6 and it could still use OD on the flat spots of the freeway. I'm on my 3rd 2.8 and the 904 keeps ticking, even if a trany line is ripped off on the trail or a hose blows on the street and the thign runs bone dry she still keeps chugging. She doesn't shift too smooth between gears when in drive but banging through 1 to 3 works fine for me. I've also had good luck with the 2004R/200R4? behind my old grand prix, maybe cheaper than a 700.

I recently bought a transmission from a guy who put a sm465 into his 2.5l 93 wrangler. He said there wasent much to it got a chevy bellhousing from a 2.8 same as the ones that come out of the jeep comanches and cherokes around 86 and bolted it right up. The SM465 has a case length of 12" (lets you have a longer drive line then a 700r4 with a case lenght of 23.375") and a gear ratio of 1ST-6.55 2nd-3.58 3rd-1.57 4th-1.00. The 700r4 has a gear ratio of 1st 3.06 2nd 1.62 3rd 1 4th .70 (30% overdriven) Reverse 2.29 Sm420 1st-705 2nd-3.58 3rd-1.71 4th-1 and has been used in every thing from 1/2 ton to 2 1/2 ton vehicles

my 2.8 is a weak motor to begin with so I've always thought it didn't have the ballz to climb certain inclines while other times it will go straight up no problem. maybe the times it seemed underpowered was due to low ATF. either way as long as I keep even the smallest amount of fluid in there it will run on the street and moderate trails all day long.

I've got to drop a dead Wagoneer at the bone yard tomorrow anyway, I'll poke around and see what they have for 904's.

I don't care about having OD anyway. Although, with 5.89's, it may be handy if it ever sees pavement.

My wheelbase is stretched a bit so driveline issues aren't too bad. I've researched the 465 deal quite a bit though. A buddy has a 465/205 laying in the garage too........but, I'm pretty partial to running an auto.

All good info......THANKS:cool:

I hate to beat a dead horse, but does anybody know what years are good/bad for these transmissions. I have a line on one out of an 85 blazer for 200. I know that any of them can be rebuild with more clutches etc. but I really don't know if there are any that you just really should stay away from. Also, which years ran the 231 behind them. I've heard that they ran them but searching has brought up the 241, close but different.
