Recently aquired a 1973 Jeep J4000 (4500). AMC 360, th400, quadratrac. Dana 44's front and rear. I am completely new to the full size Jeep scene and I can't find any axle swap info on these early 70's jeeps. The dana 44 front has a spring C to C of 39" (!) drum brakes and is of the closed knuckle variety. Anyone have experience with a Chevy axle swap for these trucks? Is it even worth doing? Are these axles worth upgrading? Just plan on mild trail riding, nothing hardcore. Any worth while upgrades in general for the truck itself? The only lift I could find was a 4" hell creek all spring lift.

Closed knuckle drum brake axle not worth its weight in dirt! lol Look for chevy 44 and measure spring centers. Everyone wants 60's but i have good luck with 44's. Im running 36's with no problems. Just stay off the skinny pedal in rough sections.

That J4000 axle is SOA and 5 on 5.5 pattern. You can look for an early 80's Dodge Dana 44 (stay SOA and 5 lug) or swap in J10/J20 axle set that came with quadratrac (off-set rear, 6-8 lug, SUA). Chevy D44 front is a solid option, but will still have to work rear to match bolt pattern (no Chevy off-set rear options). Dont forget MC and proportioning valve change for the new disc/drum set-up. If the factory brakes are adjusted and in good working order, you can trail ride with it all day. Big tires will reduce the performance.

Thanks for the info, One more question, I would really like convert this truck to part time 4x4, so, would i be money ahead just converting the quadratrac to part time or swap in a new case?
