I have been thinking of buying a 78-79 shortbed F-150 4x4 with Dana 44 front. I need something cheap to drive cause my insurance is costing me a arm and leg. I know about 5 engines were offered, the 300 six, 302, 351 Cleveland, 351 Modified, and the 400 Modified.
I dont really know what engine to go with, thats why I'm asking here. I know engine parts are hard to find because different versions were offered. I can't just settle for a 2wd truck cause they suck when you pull a boat up a launch with a steep grade.
I seen it myself before. I don't really want a 80-96 F-150 with TBB because the balljoints wear out too much.
And otherwise I would be open to other advice. My insurance is actually $2600 a year cause two tickets.
Thanks

BTW did the F-150s those two years come with only the 9 inch rearend?

78-79 f150

these are some of fords best trucks ever. i never seen a 351 cleveland in one of those as factory but they are easily mixed up with the 351-400m engines. those engines are ok but i personally prefer the little 302 although i havent seen many of those in 78-79 4wd trucks either. 300 six is torqey but no revs. all later f150s have the 9 inch rear as well as d44 front and either np435 or c6 and 205 or 203 t case. stout trucks that look good;)

Yep, 9" rear.

Of the 5 I've looked at in the past year they had the 351 or 400, they seem to be everywhere around here.

Actually I'd prefer one of the 351 series or the 400M, did the Windsor come in these trucks?

The only engines that I have seen in a 4x4 78-79 is a 351m or 400m. The 302/300 may have been an option, but must have been rare. I have seen the small block in 2wd trucks. I have cut up about 20 of these trucks. The 351c (well true 351c) died in 72-73. The 351m/400m is a clevland engine, so that may be where the 351c info is coming from.

460

Very true, but man the 460 swap is the best one to do, pretty easy also. I'd say get one with out a motor and drop in a 460.
