I'm buying an '89 XJ to use as an all purpose camp-trail-grocery getter-dog hauler. It has an automatic trans and I would like to dump it and put in a manual. I've heard the stock auto trans in the XJ was sh*t. What will fit with minimal hassle. (I know, anything will fit with a saw and welder). Suggestions appreciated.

The AW4 that came behind the 4.0 is actually a pretty good medium duty tranny. Ask local shops and they will usually tell you the same thing, "We don't get very many of those with problems at less than 200,000 miles" If you really want to go manual and want an easy swap, look for a late 89 and newer XJ and snag the AX-15 from it. Be careful of the early 89s, they came with Peugot BA-10s until halfway through the model year. The swap isn't too hard. Do a search and you should find gobs of info on it. Borg Warner world class T5s are a decent swap too, but the increase in strength over an AX-15 isn't really all that much to really justify the price in my opinion. For a few bucks more you can usually find a decent NV4500. This is going to require more fabbing since you can't just lift the parts off of a donor XJ, but if a welder and sawzall don't scare you...go for it. Check out NAXJA.org and look for a guy named Crash. He did the swap to an NV4500 and has tons of info for those looking to do the same. Good luck.

Thanks for the input. I guess I'll keep the trans for a little while, or until we smoke it. Any thoughts on transfer cases for these things?
